Basel Week Miami ’11 / Art Focus: Tracey Snelling

Since we are covering Art Basel Week Miami right now, this week’s new artist for our Art Focus is from the PULSE Art Fair showing at the Rena Bransten Gallery booth. Tracey Snelling is a Bay Area artist who creates mixed media installations incorporating photographs, miniature constructions of buildings or towns, video screens, and projections. We saw this amazing piece painstakingly constructed by Ms. Snelling that included advertising signage, loops of videos, ambient light, graffiti, and other details that encourage us to speculate on the […]

Basel Week Miami: “Here Lies Georges Wildenstein” @ Primary Projects

A couple nights ago, the Primary Projects space in Miami’s Design District hosted Here Lies Georges Wildenstein, a group show featuring Marc Bijl, Retna, Michael Vasquez, Miru Kim, Cleon Peterson, George Sánchez-Calderón, Manny Prieres, Andrew Nigon, Scott Shannon, Christina Pettersson, Shelter Serra, How & Nosm, Kenton Parker, Cole Sternberg, Edouard Nardon, & Jel Martine. The reference to the death of Wildenstein is metaphor for the “old money” powering the art world along with “the mass of collectors, curators, museum trustees (those who wield considerable socio-political powers)” over […]

Openings: Miss Van – “Muses” @ INOPERAbLE

French street femme fatale Miss Van just opened a show in Vienna featuring her sexy “poupées” and their animal friends. Featuring small to medium pieces, the new work filled the INOPERAbLE Gallery with her Muses which were admired by an adoring crowd. Unfortunately no murals were painted due to the weather but don’t rule it out for a later date. More photos via the gallery after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: NADA Fair

AM stopped by the NADA yesterday which was held at the Deauville Beach Resort in Miami. This particular art fair’s mission is to showcase young and upcoming galleries and artists in the contemporary art scene and was held in three separate sections. This cool whip monster sculpture (seen above) in particular was pretty entertaining. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: Eine & ROA for DIY // MIA

While on our way to hit up a plethora of shows associated with Art Basel Week Miami last night at the Design District, we passed by the The Living Room installation. The two-wall open structure is a whimsical and out-of-scale replica of a living room at an intersection that had been rundown as of late, but has been revitalized for this year’s art extravaganza with murals from Ben Eine and ROA for the three day music and art event  DIY // MIA sponsored by AE District Gallery, AlmostFamous.com, […]

Basel Week Miami ’11: Seonna Hong @ Lebasse Projects / PULSE

One of the first things that caught our eye as we strolled through PULSE in Miami was the new works from Seonna Hong at the Lebasse Projects booth. She put together a nice installation of the paint chip works as well as included some larger bear paintings for this showing. Interestingly enough, she worked some text into some of the pieces. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Pulse First Look

Yesterday, AM stopped by PULSE, one of the satellite fairs of Art Basel Week Miami, and we were greeted by a pretty solid selection of art work from various artists and their galleries (after the fixed a lighting issue). Before focusing in a on a few things, enjoy this selection of photos of pieces that caught our eyes as we strolled through the compound housing the fair. More photos after the jump…

Mural Ordinance Panel Discussion @ Known Gallery (Los Angeles)

As murals go up by the dozens all across Miami during Art Basel Week, an important movement in the legalization of murals is taking place in the opposite part of the country, right in the heart of Los Angeles. Last night, the Known Gallery hosted a special event and group discussion focusing on a possible new mural ordinance which could affect the legality and acceptance of L.A.-based murals for years to come. Leading the discussion was Tanner Blackman, a city planner, who is pushing towards giving […]

Openings: Aryz – “Hello World” @ Montana Gallery

Last weekend, Spanish street muralist Aryz opened his first solo show in his home country at the Montana Gallery. Reprising some of his colorful and loose outdoor works for the indoor setting with paintings and wall murals, the Barcelona-based artist showed us glimpses of the reasons behind his rising popularity. More photos after the jump by Graffart…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Underbelly Show

Last night, AM attended the opening of the Underbelly show in Miami featuring an impressive lineup of artists who all have participated in the surreptitious underground street art and graffiti project in New York. Not only did each artist contribute a quality work to the show, most of them were large scale. Anchoring the exhibition near the entrance was a wall of flatscreen TV’s all simultaneously playing high speed timelapse loops of the artists as they worked on murals for the project. Many more photos […]
