Baby Tattooville ’11: Blacksmith Tony Swatton

This year, Baby Tattooville “secret society” members were treated to something completely different from previous years. Master Blacksmith Tony Swatton, known to many as THE blacksmith of Hollywood, was invited to BT’s 5th year anniversary. Samples of Swatton’s work were displayed throughout the Mission Inn Catacombs. This included helmets, swords, and armor pieces that are similar to those created by Swatton for the Capital One commercials and Pirates of the Caribbean movies we are all so familiar with. Having recently been turned on to Lola Dupré’s work, we were excited to hear that the Glasgow based collage artist has an upcoming solo exhibition at Phone Booth Gallery in Long Beach. Entitled Shrapnel, the exhibition will showcase Lola’s ‘exploding’ portraits of icons taken from popular culture, movie starlets and fellow artists as her subject matter. Baby Tattooville ’11: Secret Store

One of the highlights of the art retreat known as Baby Tattooville is the special pop-up store that is set up each year. Filled with unique prints, toys, art products, and original art from participating artists, the “Secret Store” is a good opportunity for fans to stock up on their favorite artist swag. Sales are handled according to the number assigned to each attendee based on seniority. More preview images after the jump…

Since the Gagosian Gallery opened a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year, some international heavy hitters like Damien Hirst and Richard Prince have already graced their walls with solo shows. For their most recent exhibition, which opened a couple weeks ago, a more local star, Zeng Fanzhi, was the feature attraction. The retrospective draws from work in the last 20 years with some pieces culled from the Chinese artist’s personal collection, tracing his career of exploring the human figure with his powerfully introspective paintings. AM recently witnessed the return of Lisa Yuskavage to David Zwirner as the New York based artist unveiled a new series of paintings in her third show with the gallery since 2006. Seen were her classic female nudes depicted in cartoonish yet erotic compositions. The color palettes she selected were vibrant, rich and diverse which complimented her wide selection of environments well. Earlier this week, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for a set of new works collectively and aptly entitled Dimensional Paintings from the inventive Adam Neate (interviewed). While his landmark solo in 2009 at the same London gallery introduced his fans to the new textures and three-dimensional aspects of his new work, this latest exhibition shows a maturity, refinement, and comfort in the technique that is evident in the impressive depth and complexity of the pieces currently on view.
