AM attended a special party at Phillips de Pury for Ryan McGinness’ Black Holes” exhibition last Friday night. After bringing you an indoor and outdoor view of this mind altering installation, it seemed only natural that McGinness Studios hosts an event that incorporates the human element into the already impressive show. Invitees were reminded to dress in white/bright clothing in order to interact with the black-lit backdrop. Openings: George Condo – “Mental States” @ New Museum

On Tuesday night AM attended the private opening of Mental States at the New Museum in New York. The exhibition is the first major US survey of works by George Condo with a over 80 paintings and sculptures spanning 1982 to current day by the adventurous and imaginative artist. Utilizing two floors of the spacious museum, Condo’s work was separated into multiple areas. As part of a two person exhibition on tap next weekend at David B. Smith Gallery, Laura Ball will bring her animal imagery to Denver in striking fashion. Opening Friday, January 28th, New Works (teased) will highlight a series of the California artist’s watercolor works on paper, where colorfully rendered landscapes are set upon stark white backdrops thus sharpening the drama of the scenarios. After bringing you a glimpse (when Murakami visited) of the inaugural show at the Gagosian in Hong Kong, the gallery has sent us a more detailed look at the installation of the show and views of the spacious interior. Forgotten Promises includes some favorites and some newer works from Damien Hirst such as stunning photorealistic oil paintings of butterflies, diamond cabinets, the much talked about diamond encrusted baby skull, and much more. Last Saturday night, “The Big Picture” opened at Subliminal Projects featuring the work of DEVO frontman Mark Mothersbaugh and Shepard Fairey’s (featured). Swiss contemporary artist Andy Denzler will be dispatching a new body of work down to Seoul, Korea for an upcoming solo exhibition with Michael Shultz Gallery. Opening Thursday, Janurary 27th, the talented oil painter will show a selection of his uniquely constructed works, deliberately fragmenting his landscape based portraits in unusual ways. AM went to check out Sweet Toof and Shan Hur’s work last week in the two-person exhibition Having a Dig. Arch 402 Gallery was a new name for us, but the location was good, and the brickwork arched space located under an overground railway worked well for this pairing of very different artistic styles. Last night, Toronto-based artist Ray Caesar’s “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” premiered in New York at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new body of work, which seems to have a more personal meaning this time around, features Caesar’s signature use of 3D modeling and animation programs where he painstakingly builds up his porcelain-skinned female characters and stages them in detailed environments.
