Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10: Retna – “Silver Lining” @ Primary Projects

As we mentioned in our studio visit feature a couple weeks ago, Retna will be showing at this year’s Art Basel Week. The show entitled Silver Lining (opening Dec. 2nd) will be a completely new body of work including paintings, drawings, and an installation, but check out this huge painting that should leave no doubt that the prominent AWR/MSK member will be bringing the heat to Miami. What do we spy in the window through which the Marks and Stencils show we mentioned previously is being set up? It looks like the rumored new Banksy print Choose Your Weapon (60 cm x 60 cm, £450.00) which will be released later this month and is based on his recent “Keith Haring Dog” stencil. New Image Art’s lineup for this year’s Art Basel Week looks sharp and could be one of the more anticipated offerings at 2010’s art extravaganza in Miami. Openings: Raymond Pettibon – “Hard in the Paint” @ David Zwirner Gallery

David Zwirner Gallery in New York is currently showing Venice Beach based artist Raymond Pettibon’s newest solo exhibition entitled Hard in the Paint, which is derived from basketball terminology. The collection of works on display feature Pettibon’s signature loose hand and his representations of fragments of American society occasionally emphasized with key text and phrases. Coming up next month at Corey Helford Gallery is a solo show from Sylvia Ji’s (interviewed), known for her “Day of the Dead” imagery. As you can see by the painting above, the masks have come off since her last solo show and Sylvia is venturing into some new territory with this new body work perhaps tellingly entitled Shapeshifter. On Friday, AM attended the opening of Hush’s (interviewed) latest show Found in New York’s hip Lower East Side. The pop-up show hosted by White Walls Gallery was a quick drive-by as it only lasted the weekend. Held in the beautiful Angel Orensanz Foundation for Contemporary Art, the historic synagogue was transformed into a grand display with the help of some creative lighting and Hush’s “Geisha Portrait” series which we previewed recently in a studio visit.
