SDCC ’10: Jeff Soto – Seeker

The Seeker from Jeff Soto, an art toy from Bigshot Toyworks that we’ve been following all along its production process, is finally ready for release. We first heard about the toy from Jeff on one of our studio visits, saw a prototype at last year’s SDCC, and finally saw the finished product at his solo currently showing in NY (covered). Now comes word that one of the colorways (looks like a beautiful white to clear fade), a Hi Fructose exclusive and limited to 50, will […]

Signings: San Diego Comic-Con 2010

San Diego Comic-Con 2010 officially kicks off this Wednesday. One of the things we’ve always enjoyed about the convention is being able to chat with some of our favorite artists or for those instances when we’ve been too awe-struck, simply get a sketch or toy signed. This year’s roster has us just as excited. Be sure to arrive at least a half hour before the signing is scheduled to begin as there will definitely be lines. A schedule of the artist signings we’re excited about […]

Openings: David LaChapelle – “American Jesus” @ Paul Kasmin

Last Tuesday night, Paul Kasmin Gallery hosted the opening for David La Chapelle’s latest body of work “American Jesus.” We’re not sure if it’s the gallery or David’s following, but the space was jam-packed with onlookers gawking at David’s elaborate digitally rendered photos. Fans dressed up as if it was Halloween, mingling away, waiting to catch some time with the star artist, and much like last month’s crazy Mark Ryden opening, the action spilled into the adjacent streets. The provocative phototography grabbed everyone attention as […]

Openings: “Viva La Revolucion” @ Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Saturday evening in San Diego was a great night for street, urban, and new contemporary art. With many of the museums in so-called cultural centers of this country and world still slow to embrace a rapidly growing movement, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego made it clear where they stand with an amazing exhibition of some of the major players in this art “Revolucion”. Not only did the city open up their public spaces to the artists (albeit still with some naysayers), they also […]

Openings: Survey Select

Last Thursday night, San Diego got a rare dose of great art courtesy of Mark Murphy. The long time collector, curator, publisher, and friend to artists put together another impressive group show, this time entitled “Survey Select”, held at the Wonder Bread Factory. The well attended event kicked off a great July for Los Angeles’ southern neighbor with Viva La Revolucion and SDCC 2010 still coming up. More pics after the jump…

Preview: Viva La Revolucion @ MCASD

AM headed down to San Diego on Friday morning to catch the press preview of Viva La Revolucion at MCASD (check out our street coverage here). It was great to wander around the Jacobs Building and get a sneak peek of everything the artists have been working on indoors after seeing all the amazing pieces that have been popping up on the streets of the city. Pedro Alonzo, the exhibition’s curator, led a talk around the museum and spoke about the different artists and their work. Shepard Fairey, David Ellis, Stephan […]

Jakub Julian Ziolkowski – “Timothy Galoty & The Dead Brains” @ Hauser & Wirth NYC

Timothy Galoty & The Dead Brains is Jakub Julian Ziolkowski’s first solo exhibition in the US. The Polish painter unveils 28 paintings, which all seem to have been created this year. Off the bat, we can see that he works pretty fast and has a wildly vivid imagination. The title of the show refers to an imaginary rock band that occupies the universe Ziolkowski has given birth to. It is one that is surreal, macabre, dream-like, fluid, colorful, horrific, and beautiful. The work seems deeply […]

Setup: Seonna Hong for “Ed Emberley & Friends” @ Scion Space

For those of you who grew up on Ed Emberley’s drawing books, you may want to take a trip down memory lane tonight at the Scion Space in Los Angeles. The “Ed Emberley & Friends” exhibition will feature Emberley as well as five artists who were inspired by him – Raul Gonzalez, Saelee Oh, Matt Leines, Christopher Kline and Seonna Hong (seen above). Each will create a 6′ x 6′ panel with their interpretations of Emberley’s work. Take a look at more of her work […]

Some exciting news for Yoshitomo Nara fans out there yesterday as the NY Times announced that on August 9th, a pair of 12-foot-high fiberglass Nara dogs will be placed on the Upper East Side (one across from the entrance to the Asia Society at 725 Park Avenue, at 70th Street, and the other at 67th Street and Park Avenue just in front of the Park Avenue Armory) The Asia Society will be hosting a major retrospective with the famous Japanese pop artist entitled “Yoshitomo Nara: […]
