Showing through this weekend at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is a retrospective of Yoshitomo Nara’s career spanning 30 years. Entitled For Better Or Worse, the exhibition includes wide range of work including installations, paintings, sculptures, and drawings. As stated by the museum – “‘For better or for worse’ is a wedding vow: a lifetime commitment from one person to another. On Saturday night, September 23rd, Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles will be opening a solo from D*Face (interviewed) entitled Happy Never Ending. Currently at the Riverside Art Museum, Jeff Soto (interviewed) has a show on view featuring his screen-printed gig posters and fine art prints from the last 15 years. Entitled Potatostamp, the retrospective look at this aspect of the locally-based artist’s career includes over 70 posters, as well as 40 original ink drawings. Coming up on September 30th (coinciding nicely with the Venice Biennale), Pejac will be opening a two day only show entitled A Forest at the Squero di San Troves in Venice, Italy. The boatyard is one of the last places where traditional gondolas are still hand made, a fitting setting for those who are familiar with the Spanish artist’s work. Studio Visits: Victor Castillo

Currently at KP Projects in Los Angeles, Victor Castillo has a show on view entitled Broken Hearts, which will run through the rest of September. The new body of work features acrylic paintings (some quite large) as well as graphite drawings that continue the Chilean artist’s dark narrative seen through the lens of his not-so-innocent sausage nosed children. The official opening of the Urban Nation Museum this weekend in Berlin turned the entire area into an open-air art gallery with an extensive program that included performances, workshops, show acts and more. For this event, the organizers managed to shut a section of the bustling Bülowstrasse and turn it into an art venue called Art Mile. Recently in New York, Spoke Art opened a solo show from Dan Quintana entitled Tidepools. The exhibition sees the Los Angeles-based artist continue his dark and erie portraiture of beautiful women, oftentimes with surreal elements. Following up on last year’s showing (covered) at the New York location of Lehmann Maupin, Mr. returns to Asia with an exhibition at the gallery’s Hong Kong space. Entitled Floating in the Air in the Vicinity of a Convenience Store, the new solo features paintings, a sculpture, and a series of drawings that show his artistic process comprising of notes, scribbles, and sketches. As you can see, the Japanese artist continues to create work influenced by his love for manga and anime, a characteristic of his mentor Takashi Murakami’s “superflat” movement. […]

During the recent Artscape Festival in Sweden, Faith XLVII teamed up with Lyall Sprong to create an immersive site specific installation set deep in the Värmland forest. Depicting the moon glowing and rotating within the tall trees, this piece is another example of how the South African-born artist is stepping further away from the classic street/urban art niche.
