Preview: Jana Brike – “The Lost Children” @ Distinction Gallery

UK based artist Jana Brike will be bringing her surrealistic “paintings” stateside for a solo show opening this weekend at the Distinction Gallery. Much like how her special technique blends the digital with more tradional methods, her artistic vision appears to be a strange yet fantastic melding of the human and plant word creating some unforgettable imagery. “The Lost Children” opens on May 8th and for those interested, check out more preview images after the jump…

Preview: Joao Ruas “III” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last time we saw Joao Ruas, he was showing beside Allison Sommers (covered) in his first ever US show and it left us wanting more. Now he’s again showing beside Allison (previewed) at Thinkspace Gallery and we’ll be there to cover it when it opens tonight, May 7th. Check out a few preview images after the jump.

Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities. It seemed as though anyone and everyone who had an interest in art was in attendance. This weekend, Allison Sommers (interviewed) will be bringing her merry band of longnecks to Culver City for an exhibition at the Thinkspace Gallery. This time, she has given a name to the strange yet beautiful world her characters inhabit – Schlareffenland, also the title of the show. Events: Swoon book signing

This Saturday (May 8th, 6-9pm), Williamburg’s Urban Art Projects will host a special event to celebrate the release of Swoon’s first monograph of her work, published by Abrams. She will be signing copies of the self-titled book, which includes essays, images and thoughts, and an introduction by Jeffrey Deitch. Along with the book signing, Swoon is working with Urban Art Projects and a team of engineers and architects to produce a domed sculpture to be exhibited at Urban Art Projects’ inaugural Williamsburg Waterfront Sculpture Exhibition […]

Ana Bagayan should need no introduction to regular readers of AM, her stunning portraiture and contemporary figurative work being a regular feature here as her work continues to evolve with each and every new show. Entitled “Flutter”, Ana’s latest solo exhibition and her first body of work to be shown overseas, opens this weekend on Saturday 8th May at Rome’s Mondo Bizzaro Gallery. Completing a trio of great shows (along with ABOVE and Blek le Rat) on a great art weekend for SF was Hush’s (interviewed) “Passing Through” at the Shooting Gallery. One our stops in this past weekend’s art tour de force in NYC was Scott Campbell’s “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long”. Hailing from Miami, OHWOW Gallery created a hip Soho pop-up space that was new to AM eyes. The minty fresh location drew boatloads to the opening night festivities. Scott’s latest series of works definitely “wowed” us even more than anticipated than from our teaser and preview articles. Present were his signature cut-currency sculptures, intricate in design and often depicting objects, animals or slogans. […]
