Preview: Laurie Lipton – “Weapons of Mass Delusion” @ Grand Central Art Center

London-based artist, Laurie Lipton, is getting set to open her show this weekend at the Grand Central Art Center at Cal State Fullerton. This exhibition will include new and old works (some from her Liverpool show in November), featuring some of her signature incredibly detailed “drawings” that have to be seen to be believed. “Weapons of Mass Delusion”, opening May 1st, not only showcases Lipton’s rendering skills but also her biting social commentary including familiar scenarios such as impotent witnesses to a crime (seen above), […]

Openings: JR – “Women Are Heroes” @ Galerie Springmann.Varol

Germany got a healthy dosage of JR with his recent opening at Duesseldorf’s Gallery Springmann.Varol. The latest exhibition in JR’s  “Women Are Heroes” project, (previously seen in Paris and London) had much of the town buzzing. The gorgeous gallery was a great space for the French street photographer to showcase his talents. Both the inside and outside were fully utilized by the artist’s signature photo paste-ups. As teased, JR created another phenomenal wall installation consisting of 128 “speaker eyes” similar to the one we experienced at the […]

Openings: Phil Frost “Pale Writer” @ Known Gallery

It’s a rare and special privilege for your city when two of the biggest names in urban art open shows on the same weekend in galleries separated by just a few miles.  Having been treated to the spectacular exhibition staged by David Choe, Los Angeles braced itself for a show of brand new work by the highly respected and unique artist Phil Frost.  Frost filled Known Gallery to the brim with artwork mostly in two different uniform sizes, consisting of his unmistakable masked characters. More […]

Events: Brooklyn Museum – Artist Talk & Book Signing with Shepard Fairey

The last time we were at the Brooklyn Museum, we were taking in Takashi Murakami’s Retrospective (covered).  Recently, we went back with our friend  Shepard Fairey as he gave an insightful artist discussion (previewed) along with a book signing for museum patrons and fans.  Lining up as early as 11AM to get a prime seat, many of New York’s art fans came out to listen to Shepard speak about his turbulent history in the street art scene. The talk also became interactive as attendees were […]

Openings: Blaine Fontana – “The Golden Record” @ Lebasse Projects

In what sounds like an eternity in the fast-moving and evolving world of contemporary art, Blaine Fontana has just opened his first gallery exhibition in 3 years.  He returns with a tightly constructed, cohesive body of work with a unified theme.  The solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects in Culver City features 13 paintings, using acrylic and almost entirely on board, all intricately and exquisitely rendered by the Otis graduate. More, including images of the entire show, after the jump…

Setup / Preview: Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade – NYC edition

Some of you may have heard rumblings about an upcoming Faile x Bast show coming to NYC.  We can finally confirm that it’s true.  Even better is that it’s a pop up show in the Lower East Side (LES) of the Big Apple.  Faile and Bast’s recent arcade show at London’s Lazarides (Rathbone Place) was so unique and popular that it got many US fans in a state of envy.  Originally conceived as a one-off show, Faile and Bast decided to create a brand new […]

Openings: Herbert Baglione – “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” @ Iguapop Gallery

Herbert Baglione’s solo at the Iguapop Gallery in Spain opened last weekend with a series of new paintings, wall murals, and installations. We heard much from one of our favorite Brazilian artists since his show in SF, but it look as though “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” is another beautiful body of work with a cooler and more muted pallette. More images after the jump…

Consisting of a healthy blend of media, WRaN’s […]

Streets: Banksy in San Francisco (Part III)

Sir Banksy is on a tear in SF as we round up 6 different spots which he banged out in the past few days. As we see two which we already covered (Part I & Part II), what’s cool is our friends from Warholian did a little hometown research and plotted the exact addresses of each piece. So if you’re lucky enough to be near the Bay area, you should get your GPS out and do a little urban sight seeing. (While they lasts…) See pics of each one […]
