Preview: Laurie Lipton – “Weapons of Mass Delusion” @ Grand Central Art Center

London-based artist, Laurie Lipton, is getting set to open her show this weekend at the Grand Central Art Center at Cal State Fullerton. This exhibition will include new and old works (some from her Liverpool show in November), featuring some of her signature incredibly detailed “drawings” that have to be seen to be believed. “Weapons of Mass Delusion”, opening May 1st, not only showcases Lipton’s rendering skills but also her biting social commentary including familiar scenarios such as impotent witnesses to a crime (seen above), […]

Openings: JR – “Women Are Heroes” @ Galerie Springmann.Varol

Germany got a healthy dosage of JR with his recent opening at Duesseldorf’s Gallery Springmann.Varol. The latest exhibition in JR’s “Women Are Heroes” project, (previously seen in Paris and London) had much of the town buzzing. The gorgeous gallery was a great space for the French street photographer to showcase his talents. Both the inside and outside were fully utilized by the artist’s signature photo paste-ups. The last time we were at the Brooklyn Museum, we were taking in Takashi Murakami’s Retrospective (covered). Recently, we went back with our friend Shepard Fairey as he gave an insightful artist discussion (previewed) along with a book signing for museum patrons and fans. In what sounds like an eternity in the fast-moving and evolving world of contemporary art, Blaine Fontana has just opened his first gallery exhibition in 3 years. He returns with a tightly constructed, cohesive body of work with a unified theme. The solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects in Culver City features 13 paintings, using acrylic and almost entirely on board, all intricately and exquisitely rendered by the Otis graduate. Herbert Baglione’s solo at the Iguapop Gallery in Spain opened last weekend with a series of new paintings, wall murals, and installations. We heard much from one of our favorite Brazilian artists since his show in SF, but it look as though “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” is another beautiful body of work with a cooler and more muted pallette. Openings – New Directions @ White Walls

Opening alongside “Meticulous Engagements” at the Shooting Gallery was White Walls’ “New Directions” a group show consisting of five talents that the gallery has been building this past year. Featuring Mark Warren Jacques (pictured above), Henry Gunderson (interviewed), Akira Beard, Robert Burden, and Cheryl Molnar. New Directions is a look at several distinctly different and unique styles each exploring their own directions. Full photo set after the jump.
