Recommended openings for this weekend

Los Angeles leads the worldwide charge this weekend with a slew of simply massive shows going off. From the return of David Choe at Lazarides’ Beverly Hills pop-up space and Phil Frost’s much anticipated LA solo debut at Known Gallery to a very ambitious show at Scion curated by Roger Gastman, LA is the place to be yet again this weekend. Catch all the action after the jump.

Openings: Kristen Schiele – “Elektra” @ Sloan Fine Art

Kristen Schiele’s solo show “Elektra” opened this past Wednesday evening at New York’s Sloan Fine Art. We love Kristen’s use of multiple mediums and her thrilling mixture of oil paint and screen print in her compositions featuring skewed architecture and a cast of 70’s femme noir characters. We recently interviewed Kristen just ahead of this show, and if you missed it first time around you can catch that here. More opening night pictures courtesy of Anna Ortt after the jump.

Preview: Thomas Doyle – “Collateral Damage” @ Lebasse Projects

New York based artist, Thomas Doyle (featured), has a new body of work prepared for his show this weekend, April 24th, at Lebasse Projects entitled “Collateral Damage.” The appropriately named show features a series of exquisite sculptures of houses set in precariously impossible positions such as upside down and teetering on a cliff on all sides. Yet despite his captivating play on architecture, what draws collectors to Doyle’s work is his ability to capture the human condition and their emotions when thrown into environs that […]

Signing: James Jean @ LA Times Festival of Books

For those of you who would like to meet the talented Mr. Jean, here’s your chance (at least if you are in LA). This Saturday, April 24th, James Jean (interviewed), will be signing at the LA Times Festival of Books.  He’ll be at the Giant Robot booth from 4:00 to 5:30 pm and will be bringing along art books, assorted prints, and knick knacks for your enjoyment. Who knows, if you become friends, you might get a gift from him one day like this beautiful […]

Teaser: Chloe Early @ Corey Helford Gallery

The last we saw Chloe Early (interviewed), she had just opened her solo show, “Clouded Apollo”, last November in the UK. Now, it looks like she has started working on her next show slated to open in October at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. We’ll have more as the show gets nearer, but for now, take a look at this in progress piece… Discuss Chloe Early here.

Preview: Mark Ryden – “The Gay 90’s: Old Tyme Art Show” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

Ever since we saw the first stunning painting at Art Basel for Mark Ryden’s upcoming show, we have had the date, April 29th, marked down on our calendars. Subsequent peeks at a timelapse of that piece, “Incarnation” and a look at one of the most beautiful show invites ever have only served to increase our artlust even more. And now, it appears some preview images have leaked for the show opening next week at Paul Kasmin Galley in New York which have pushed expectations of […]

Openings: ‘Fresh Cream 2’ @ Opus Art

AM went along to Opus Art’s opening of group show “Fresh Cream 2” (previewed) at its Newcastle gallery last week to check out the collective wares of Lex Thomas, Hush, Ghost of a Dream, Charlotte Bracegirdle, Alexandra McLain, Hector de Gregorio, Karl de Vroomen and Teresa Duck. The show brought together a great level of variance in the outputs, mediums and techniques used by the artists involved. Read on for our take on the show, as well as our pictures from the opening after the […]

FAME Festival ’10: Swoon

Well, shortly after announcing their lineup for 2010, this year’s FAME Festival is already underway. First to arrive were Swoon (interviewed) and Ben Wolf to participate in this annual Italian celebration of street art (take a look at our coverage of the 2009 event here). Unfortunately, Wolf’s work was destroyed before it was photographed but here are some photos of Swoon pasting up an old chapel as well as other parts of town. More images after the jump.

Preview: Souther Salazar Installation for Fumetto Festival

Souther Salazar recently put together a pretty dope installation piece for the upcoming Fumetto Festival in Switzerland (with an assist from Monica Choy). As you can see from his other installs for recent shows in New York & Los Angeles, Souther is quite skilled at creating these whimsical mixed media pieces that seem to jump straight out of one of his paintings. The exhibition will be Souther’s first solo in Europe and will feature larger paintings, comics, sculptures and drawings displayed along with “Alejandro”! More […]

Teaser: Shepard Fairey Mural for Deitch Projects

The famed mural space on Soho’s Houston Street is about to cycle on to the next artist. The last time that we checked in on the location, Os Gemeos had created a masterful work of street art (featured). That has all been buffed now in preparation for Shepard Fairey to hit this central spot with his own brand of urban beautification for his upcoming show at Deitch Projects. AM stopped by Shepard’s Studio Number Two on Friday (more on that later) and got a sneak peak […]
