Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – David Kordansky Gallery

One of the most exciting galleries showing emerging art talent in Culver City, David Kordansky Gallery had a colorful and visually stunning booth at Art Los Angeles Contemporary that contained a mixture of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and photography. It included artists from their excellent gallery roster, including Amy Bessone, Aaron Curry, Mark Flores, Ruby Neri, Anthony Pearson, Mai-Thu Perret, and Lesley Vance. Showing alongside Miss Van tonight at Merry Karnowsky Gallery is Barcelona-based artist Victor Castillo. He follows up his debut show there last August with a new body of work entitled “Strange Fruit.” His deeply satirical work often takes what initially seem like harmless children – well, sausage nosed children – which on second look are engaged in situations they should not be involved in, with dangerous overtones all around. The last time we heard from French street artist Miss Van, she was opening her retrospective show at StolenSpace in London in October of ’09. Kehinde Wiley x PUMA (Paris Opening)

You may recall a project we told you about recently between Kehinde Wiley and PUMA for the World Cup this year. If you remember, the exhibition of paintings Kehinde created of three African soccer stars as well as a portrait with all three together representing the unity of Africa traveled to Berlin for an official unveiling. It has now moved on to Paris and Guillotine has all the pics including the individual portraits. More pics after the jump.

We recently stopped by Hiro Kurata’s studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to get a sneak peak of what he’s been working on for his upcoming two-person show with Tat Ito (featured), entitled “From Kojiki To Modern Heroism,” which opens February 13 at Joshua Liner Gallery. Kurata, who was born in Osaka, Japan, and raised in Tokyo and Chicago, has been based in NYC since studying illustration at Parsons in the mid-00s.
