Openings: Deth P. Sun – “Please Be Brave” @ Giant Robot 2

Last weekend, Deth P. Sun (fresh off his Giant Robot Biennale exhibition), opened “Please Be Brave,” a new body of work at Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle Street. The centerpiece of the show was this fantastic assemblage (above) made up of individual 5″ x 5″ paintings. Not only does this make each piece affordable but also allows a collector to put together their own combination at home from selected pieces. More images after the jump…

Video: Baby Tattooville ’09 – Art Jam

The unifying force to each and every Baby Tattooville “Secret Society” gathering is the collaborative art jam painting.  All artists who participate at the event put their brushes to the panel, but unlike the solitude they work with at their respective studios, they are able to feed off each other’s creativity, build upon their peers’ foundations, and revel in the camaraderie.  Unique styles are complemented, morphed, or transformed upon by others. Fortunately for all those who were unable to witness the group painting in person […]

If you are near Pasadena tonight, you might want to stop by the Switcheroo x Flopdoodle Holiday Party put on by Tim Biskup, Amanda Visell, and Michelle Valigura. Fresh off his big show last weekend, Biskup is back in action – this time with collaborative sculptures with Visell – the centerpiece of the night, a “HelperCentaurEphunt” (seen after the jump) limited edition wood figure. As you can see by the image above, it will consist of Biskup’s iconic “Helper” and Visell’s iconic elephant figures squeezed […]

Tonight is the opening of artist and illustrator Yoko Tanaka’s show at David B. Smith Gallery – part of a three person show with Katherine Guillen and Andrea Offerman. If you are in Denver, definitely stop by as Tanaka will be making a rare appearance all the way from Thailand. More preview images after the jump…

Video: Behind the Scenes: Tim Burton at MoMA

We are sure most are familiar with Tim Burton as a director, producer and writer from his dark and quirky films, such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhand, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the upcoming Alice in Wonderland. This weekend, we will also see the artistic side of his career when MoMA in New York opens a retrospective featuring well over 700 paintings, drawings, photos, puppets, costumes, story boards, short films, and slideshows – basically anything you can think of. Take a […]

Preview: Naoto Hattori – “Out There” @ M Modern

This Friday, Japanese sensation Naoto Hattori will be bringing psychedelic art to the desert – Palm Springs to be exact. “Out There” opens at M Modern and will feature his usual bizarre animals, distorted heads, and imaginative landscapes. Although Hattori specializes in imagery that is grotesque to say the least, there is a strange sense of beauty that he infuses in all his paintings, perhaps in no small part due to the insane amount of detail he puts into each piece. More preview images after […]
