Openings: Yumiko Kayukawa – “God from the East” & Ben Tour @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Over the weekend, AM attended the opening of two shows at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. In the front gallery was Yumiko Kayukawa’s “God from the East,” which consists of a new collection of small- and medium-sized paintings. Kayukawa’s work blends modern and traditional aspects of Japanese culture with a colorful, playful style.Â In gallery two, Vancouver-based artist Ben Tour is exhibiting a selection of dark and free-flowing portraits of women on canvas and paper, as well as a large-scale mural. Here is the amazing and unprecedented collaboration piece between Amy Sol (interviewed) and Greg “Craola” Simkins (interviewed) for this year’s Crazy 4 Cult show at Gallery 1988 (LA). Studio Visits: The Clayton Brothers

AM had a chance to visit the studio of the Clayton Brothers a couple weeks back as they prepared for their first major show in Los Angeles in six years. Bravo TV is casting this week in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and New York for their new reality show “Untitled Art Project.” The station that brought you Top Chef and Project Runway are hoping to find and/or create the world’s newest art superstar. While in the UK, AM made a special visit to the Serpentine Gallery to get an exclusive viewing of â€œPopeye Series, Jeff Koons first major exhibition in London. Openings: “Monster?” @ Copro Gallery

Last night, the “Monster?” group show (previewed) curated by Travis Louie (interviewed), opened at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica to a full house of monster lovers. They weren’t disappointed as artists took creative means to paint and sculpt their versions of of the theme, all the way from hideous vampires and Frankenstein to Charlie Brown and childhood piano teachers. Openings: EINE – “The A – Z of Change” @ Carmichael Gallery

AM enjoyed the intense visual experience of EINE’s Los Angeles debut solo show “The A – Z of Change” (previewed) which opened at Carmichael Gallery this past Thursday. The buffet of vibrant colored squares strewn across the walls served as the perfect backdrop for his amazing canvas pieces and the powerful imagery contained therein. Releases: James Jean’s “Kindling” Book – San Diego Comic-Con

A limited number of advance copies of James Jean’s (interviewed) book featuring work from his NYC solo show will be released at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Published by Chronicle Books, “Kindling” presents 12 of James’ visual mix of abstract and illustrative works from the show, along with his detailed preliminary sketch for the work on the reverse side, printed in a removable large poster format.
