Earlier this month, Quint Gallery in La Jolla opened a new show from Kelsey Brookes (featured), continuing their support for the locally-based artist that has spanned over a decade (see 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018). Showing: Josh Tiessen, Kelogsloops, Sasha Ira, Bao Pham @ Corey Helford Gallery

Currently at the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, a four person show is on view through January 18 entitled Chimera. Included in the group exhibition are Canada-based artist Josh Tiessen’s paintings that explore interactions between the natural world and manmade structures, Australian artist kelogsloops’ anime inspired suspended-in-time female portraiture, Chicago-based Sasha Ira’s new series entitled Undercurrents, and painter and illustrator Bao Pham’s lush and colorful work. Recap: Hendrik Beikirch – “Warriors” @ Galerie Wolfsen

Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark recently introduced a new body of work by Hendrik Beikirch, presented next to black and white still lifes and vanitas-like compositions by Hedley Roberts. The new body of work from he German artist is entitled Warriors, portraying people involved in conflicts, whatever the word ‘conflict’ might imply. The works consist of several canvases of different sizes and depths, alluding to the many different layers of truth that every conflict entails. Openings: Chris Berens – “Feniks” @ Jaski Gallery

Over the weekend, Jaski Gallery in Amsterdam hosted the opening of sold out solo show from Chris Berens entitled Feniks, Utilizing a special mixed media process, the Dutch artist hand paints different fantastical elements on glossy paper and then collages them together to get his unique finished image. Included in the new body of work was the centerpiece of the exhibition, Crowning Glory, a large 240 x 220 cm painting with its own specially designed and frame created by a master wood carver. Basel Week Miami ’19 / Recap: Art Basel

Earlier this week, the 18th edition of Art Basel Miami opened at the Miami Beach Convention Center with 269 galleries, offering artwork by mostly blue chip artists from around the world. Drawing visitors in for the beautiful (albeit chillier than usual this year) weather and gathering of friends and associates, an almost unending selection of paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film, video, and digital art greeted their eyes (and wallets) as they perused the main fair. Previews: Kris Kuksi & Mark Wagner – “Bounty” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Tonight at the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York, Kris Kuksi & Mark Wagner will be opening a joint show entitled Bounty. While both artists take found objects and create assemblages, the materials they use and end results are quite different yet both quite striking. Kuksi arranges elementals model kits, jewelry remnants, and kitsch statuary into architectural frieze like works, complex compositions that reference “historical narratives, biblical subjects, animal worship, architecture, symbolic views on commerce and development, as well as human psychology and behavior.” In contrast, […]

Last weekend, the fourth edition of ComplexCon (also see 2016 & 2017 & 2018) Long Beach once again bought together “pop culture, music, art, food, style, sports, innovation, activism, and education” for a unique event. British artist Remi Rough (featured) just opened his first New York solo at WallWorks Gallery in the Bronx. Running until December 13, 2019, Air Miles and Mechanised High-Tech Graffiti Style features new works along with a site-specific installation with Rough’s signature abstract geometric style and use of line and color. The exhibition’s title is an ode to Zephyr’s exhibition at FUN Gallery in New York—an inspirational figure for the British artist. Previews: “Universes 2” @ The Garage

Following up on a successful group show last year (covered), Sasha Bogojev (the curator) has moved the exhibition to Amsterdam with a new roster of artists for a second iteration.
