Preview: Amy Crehore @ Thinkspace

Amy Crehore opens her solo exhibition “Dreamgirls & Ukes” at Thinkspace this Friday, 2/13 @ 7pm. The show will feature Crehore’s signature dream-like sequences of iconic nudes and playful animal characters painted on linen and rare 1920’s ukuleles.Â Opening night will also feature a live performance of blues, rags, and jug band songs from the 20’s and 30’s by Crehore’s band, The Hokum Scorchers.Â For a better look at Crehore’s work, check out the in-depth interviewÂ posted by our friends at Sour Harvest. Openings: Dan May @ Copro Nason

Â Dan May (interviewed) was in attendance at the opening of his solo show â€œSlow Collisionâ€ this past Saturday at Copro Nason. In addition to having the pleasure of meeting and speaking with May himself, attendees were intrigued by May’s dreamlike, lush environments and delightful yet haunting humanoids and monsters. Artist and designer Kaws was featured on CBS News Sunday Morning. The segment features an in-depth interview, gives an inside look at Pharrell Williams’ amazing collection, and provides an overview of Kaws’ career, past and present. In other Kaws news, fans lucky enough to receive an invitation to Kaws’ upcoming, “The Long Way Home” show (teased) at Honor Fraser received a color variant of the Kaws head that accompanied the Bounty Hunter Kaws Kun toy. Baby Tattooville alumni Bob Dob is opening what looks to be a surf culture themed show, not surpising as he grew up in Hermosa Beach.Â The show opens Valentine’s Day at Billy Shire Fine Arts with a body of work featuring his familiar characters, birds, waves and of course, the ubiquitous and mischevious little devil – Luey.Â Take a look at some paintings from the show after the jump.

If last year’s event is anything to go by, the Black Rat Press Annual Print Show in London, opening on Saturday, 21st February will be worth checking out. AM checked out Baltimore street artist Chris Stain’s solo exhibition, “Up On The Roof Countin’ Pigeons,” (previewed) at the Carmichael Gallery. Stain absolutely knocked one out of the park with his transformation of the front gallery space into a New York City rooftop scene, which featured an amazing gargantuan-sized mural on one of the gallery’s walls. Jeff Soto gave an interesting talk along with a slideshow last night at the Riverside Art Museum to his strong fan base in the area.Â He covered his graffiti roots, childhood, inspirations, and took the audience through a progression of his work.Â It was very instructive to hear what was important (family, Riverside area, politics, etc) to Jeff in his painting, and to really understand the transitions and beginnings of his work.Â Afterwards, he took time to sign books and chat with all his fans. Greg “Craola” Simkins’ (interviewed) and Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) shows opened last night at Fifty24SF with both artists in attendance to greet adoring fans.Â Simkins expanded on “still life” themes from his last two shows while Lister focused on different versions of a familiar image as well as painting photos of his friends.
