Recap: WALL\THERAPY 2015

After sharing with you a look at Andreas Englund’s amazing new mural for this year’s WALL\THERAPY festival in Rochester, New York, we now have a summary of the event for you. Cai Guo-Qiang – “Sky Ladder” (China)

Explosive Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang recently successfully unleashed his Sky Ladder over Huiyu Island in Quanzhou to celebrate his grandmother’s 100th birthday. This fourth and final attempt is a culmination of 21 years of hard work to realize a vision he had when he was a child. Assisted by a helium balloon and ladder covered with pyrotechnics, the stunning display rose 500 meters into the air and lasted two and a half minutes. Openings: “Lush Life 5: Reverie” @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue upped the ante for the fifth edition of their Lush Life group show, titled Reverie.  With both the main floor and upstairs project room utilized, and the debut of the large installation piece by Cheyenne Randall, the gallery was literally packed to the rafters. Streets: Os Gemeos x JR x Andre Saraiva (New York)

In town for their Parallel Connection project (covered), Brazilian twins Os Gemeos used this opportunity to create a couple of sneaky street works with their friends. They teamed up with French part-time locals, JR and Andre Saraiva, and painted some lovely pieces on the streets of SoHo in New York. Mixing their different styles and signature elements, artists were able to created a lovely collaboration. Openings: Faile x BÄST – “Deluxx Fluxx Arcade” @ Brooklyn Museum

After sharing photos from the Savage/Sacred Young Minds showing at the Brooklyn Museum with you last week, we now have an additional look at the arcade installation there from Faile (featured) and their long time collaborator Bast. After previous iterations seen in places like New York, Miami, Scotland, and London, this immersive experience finally makes an appearance in museum form. Consisting of video games, pinball machines, and foosball tables, the entire interactive environment with signatures imagery are designed by the artists down to the actual games. Discuss Faile here.

Openings: FAILE – “Savage/Sacred Young Minds” @ Brooklyn Museum

Last month, the Brooklyn Museum welcomed in the locally based duo Faile (featured) for a solo show entitled Savage/Sacred Young Minds. The exhibition showed off a wide range of works from the Patrick’s including their  Temple project that first made its appearance for PortugalArte ‘10, prayer wheels, large scale paintings, and more pieces all influenced by “a wide variety of sources, including American quilts, folk and Native American art, religious architecture, pulp magazines, comic books, sci-fi movie posters, adult entertainment advertisements, and storefront typography.” Included was also a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade (more on this […]

Showing: Axel Void – “Sehnsucht” @ BC Gallery

Currently at BC Gallery in Berlin, Axel Void has a series of provocative works on display entitled Sehnsucht. The solo show from the Miami-based artist consists mainly of small and large paintings featuring portraits of people with plastic wrapped around their heads as well as some videos (sample here). Earlier this week, AM stopped by the studio of Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) to see what he has been up to and what he has planned for the future. Along with picking up some of the whimsical Pothead plant holders he is producing through Sunny Side Up Studio, we also enjoyed seeing some of the new paintings he has been working on – many sunsets and polka dots in a beautiful new color palette. After tipping you off a few days ago about Os Gemeos’ three minutes of fame at New York’s Times Square, we now have some photos and video to share of their animation that runs from 11:57pm to midnight each night in August. The two brothers entitled the short clip Parallel Connection which features their signature yellow characters interacting with the screens and staring down at the mass of people at the busy intersection.
