Streets: Pejac (Paris)

Pejac (introduced) recently visited Paris and left a several new pieces scattered around the city. We just got these images of the last three pieces he did there, and even though quite different in their concept and style, they are examples of his wittiness and talent. Using just a basic color palette (mostly black and white) with minimal intervention onthe surface he is painting on, the Spanish artist achieves strong pieces both aesthetically and conceptually. Previews: Yoskay Yamamoto – “rainy day with a chance of sun” @ Hellion Gallery

On October 2nd, the Hellion Gallery in Portland will be presenting new works from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) tentatively entitled rainy day with a chance of sun. Like his recent showing in Los Angeles (covered), the new whimsical body of work will consist of paintings, clusters of smaller works, and his hand-crafted wooden sculptures. The Los Angeles-based Sam Falls recently returned to Brooklyn for an outdoor project with the help of The Public Art Fund. Entitled Light Over Time, this exhibition held in the MetroTech Center courtyard clearly brings Fall’s installation magic into the outdoor setting. There are five sculptural works placed in select locations that invite the viewer to interact with the pieces. Whether it’s a tetris-like bench that changes color depending on the temperature or a large wind chime that can be rung, it’s pretty fitting to enjoy Fall’s simple design […]

Streets: El Mac (Toronto)

El Mac was finally able to leave the States for the first big mural project he has done out of the country since having struggled with health issues as of late. Thankfully, it looks like he has recovered nicely with his skills intact from the looks of this stunning piece that was commissioned by Eventscape in Toronto. The wall adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway was executed in collaboration with Montreal’s STARE and Toronto’s KWEST, who contributed on the background. Discuss El Mac here.

After a look at the The Ninth Wave, a fishing boat installation from Cai Guo-Qiang’s hometown of Quanzhou carrying 99 fabricated animals, we now turn our attention to the exhibition with the same name at the Power Station of Art. Housed at a renovated power station in Shanghai, the ample space at the museum was a perfect setting for the Chinese artist’s work as well as the creative sessions (also see LA 2012) where pieces of commissioned art were produced utilizing his signature gunpowder technique. Over the weekend, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his new showcase (arranged by LeBasse Projects) at Harbour City in Hong Kong. Like other artists before him – KAWS (here), Yayoi Kusama, Yue Minjun (here), and Florentijn Hofman (here) – the New York based artist’s work dominated the main entrance and was also supported by a small exhibition of his work. Included are a 6.5 meter high stainless steel sculpture as well his contemporary Japanese imagery gracing the stairs, pillars, and adjacent billboards. Streets: Phlegm for Djerbahood (Tunisia)

Continuing our tour of the amazingly extensive street art festival (coverage here) put on by Galerie Itinerrance in Tunisia, we now turn our attention to Phlegm. Creating a series of small murals on abandoned structures, the UK-based artist played around with the architectural elements and painted appropriately placed windows and doors for his signature characters to interact with. The end result are some of our favorite pieces yet for the Djerbahood Project. Discuss Phlegm here.

Releases: James Jean – “Tiger III” Print

Next week, James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new signed and numbered print, Tiger III, on his website. As a timed release, the limited edition will be available for 24 hours starting at 8:00 AM PDT on Tuesday, August 19th and ending at 7:59 on Wednesday the 20th with the run being determined by demand.
