Streets: El Mac (Los Angeles)

After returning from Denmark where he worked on several murals and a solo exhibition, El Mac recently took time to paint a wall in Little Armenia. Arranged for by FX, the new piece will help promote their series, The Bridge, for several months before reverting to another beautiful addition to the urban landscape in Los Angeles. Take a look at more shots we took for you to enjoy below… Discuss El Mac here.

Streets: Revok x POSE on Bowery & Houston (Part I)

AM took some time to catch up with artists Revok and POSE (pictured above) as they were next to tackle that monster wall on the corner of Bowery & Houston. Following in the footsteps of many notable artists such as RETNA, Kenny Scharf, Barry McGee, Shepard Fairey, AIKO, Os Gemeos, JR, Keith Haring, CRASH and Faile, the two members of the MSK crew accepted this hefty project at the historic mural location, but took a little bit of a different approach. Over the course of six days, the […]

Studio Visits: Jen Stark – ‘Vortextural’ @ Cooper Cole

AM recently had the pleasure to visit the studio of multi-disciplinary artist Jen Stark as she prepares for her debut solo show in Canada tonight (6-10 pm) with Cooper Cole in Toronto. The LA-based artist’s process is meticulous and her studio is very well organized with numerous projects coming to life simultaneously. Instantly recognizable as her own, Stark’s work is rich in color theory and draws heavily from her interest in mathematics, deep space and the natural world. Take a glimpse below at her new […]

Streets: RIME (New York)

It’s been a while since we featured an in-depth look (see 2012) at one of RIME’s street pieces here on AM. It’s not for lack of material as the prolific artist otherwise known as Jersey Joe travels constantly putting up work around the world. This newest piece in New York featuring his signature mix of letters and gritty cartoonish characters was painted in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge. Also, check out an associated video and interview with RIME by the Village Voice where he covers […]

Contests / Releases: Von – “Semblance 16” Print

We have been following the UK-based Von’s (interviewed) work for while now and if you recall, our readers have benefited from several giveaways we have run in the past (2010, 2011, 2012). This year is not any different as he has just released Semblance 16 for pre-order, a new limited edition here. You can see all the details here and order one for yourself, but AM has one of these beauties to give away. Just leave a comment below this article to enter. Also, to qualify for the […]

Streets: Liu Bolin (New York)

It looks like Chinese artist Liu Bolin was back in New York again recently since the last time he was in the Big Apple when we hung out with him and JR as they worked on an interesting collaborative project together. While in town for his current exhibition at Eli Klein Fine Art, site of his show in 2012 (covered), the photographer and painter decided to stop by 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center, in an area of Queens which has heavy graffiti presence. The walls there will soon be replaced […]

Openings: “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

Over the weekend, AM stopped by the Orange County Musuem of Art to take a look at the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial that just opened, in particular Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) installation. Along with some paintings he submitted, the Los Angeles-based artist also painted a room with his signature patterns and added some interesting adornments. Take a look at some of the work from the rest of the artists as well as more shots of Mark’s contributions. Photo credit: James Ng for Arrested Motion. Discuss Mark Dean Veca here.

Openings: A New Sculpturalism @ MOCA Geffen

Opening last week at MOCA’s Geffen location was A New Sculpturalism, a show that examines the work of thirty-eight major and emerging practices in contemporary Los Angeles architecture of the past twenty-five years. Well-known legends represented in the show include Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, and Eric Owen Moss, while younger architects, such as Elena Manferdini (Atelier Manferdini), Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich (P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S), and Tom Wiscombe (Tom Wiscombe Design) show off their abilities with three full-scale built projects, or pavilions. This exhibition is part of Pacific […]

Leandro Erlich – “Dalston House” (London)

Argentinean artist Leandro Erlich has unleashed another interactive installation in a vacant lot on Ashwin Street in East London as part of Beyond Barbican. Known for his art pieces that often stretches the viewer’s mind with unexpected optical illusions, this particular one entitled Dalston House utilizes a modality he has tried before. Placing the facade of Victorian house on the ground and then attaching a massive mirror at a 45 degree angle to it, people can position themselves to look like they are scaling the building or dangling […]

Openings: Israel Lund @ Eleven Rivington

Last week, Eleven Rivington (11 Rivington Street location) unveiled a new body of work from Brooklyn-based artist Israel Lund. This intriguing exhibition showcases Lund’s interesting viewpoint and technique. His creative process often starts as an image of nothing, which he then repeatedly silkscreens and forces ink onto the null area. He then manipulates the image by enlarging, degrading or distorting it systematically thus eventually creating something out of nothing. Through this process, Lund extrapolates a unique yet repetitive aspect for each series he creates. Utilizing the CMYK colors, […]
