Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. Openings: Parra – “Il Senso di Colpa” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida

Earlier today in Italy, illustrator, artist, and designer, Parra opened his solo show Il Senso di Colpa (The Guilt) at Galleria Patricia Armocida. In accordance with the title of his show, the artist focused this body of work on the feeling of guilt and similar emotions that are often limiting and troubling for many of us. Through a series of black and white drawings, watercolors, and his signature red & blue acrylic paintings, the Dutch artist showed situations and reactions that are somehow connected with feelings of guilt and self-judgement. Openings: Keith Haring & RETNA @ Central Plaza (Hong Kong)

With the art world focus on Hong Kong right now because of Art Basel (covered), AM paid another high profile show a visit (also see Murakami & Basquiat). Thursday night saw the explosive opening of an exhibition of works from the late New York graffiti legend Keith Haring paired with pieces from the Los Angeles-based rising star RETNA. Held on the 75th floor of Central Plaza, the second highest building on the island after IFC, panoramic views greeted attendees as they checked out the showing presented by Andy […]

Yesterday saw the opening of Asia’s preeminent art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, housed in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). With a strong tilt towards galleries based in the region, the fair boasted over 170 booths with a plethora of worthy art for collectors and fans to enjoy. Here are some of the highlights for us including a huge piece from Mr. (seen above), different versions of the new Murakami sculpts, a section dedicated to Yayoi Kusama sculptures, and much more. The […]

Studio Visit: Michael Johansson

Earlier this year, our EU correspondent Henrik Haven headed over to visit Michael Johansson’s studio in Malmø. The Swedish artist was in the midst of preparing for his show Familar Abstractions that just ended at the  Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway (more on this soon). Famous for his hued fabricated cube assemblage made from everyday objects, Johansson’s space was understandably organized by careful color coding. Interestingly enough, you can get an idea of his process by seeing the equipment in his studio. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Discuss Michael Johansson […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara @ Pace Gallery

During Frieze Week, Pace Gallery held the much anticipated opening for Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. The solo exhibition is Nara’s first with the blue chip gallery since joining its esteemed roster in 2011. For his first return to New York City after his comprehensive retrospective at the Asia Society, the Nara pulled no stops and displayed a well-rounded series that included works on canvas, bronze, and paper. Also this body of work included pieces that made it from his Japanese museum exhibitions at the  Yokohama […]

Showing: Stephen “ESPO” Powers – “Visual Blues” @ Alice Gallery

Last week, fans of ESPO (featured) in Brussels were treated to a new solo from the New York-based artist when Visual Blues opened up at the Alice Gallery. The new body of work centered around a series of small pieces he paints daily called Metaltations as well as larger versions of those pieces. The imagery centers around witty wordplays and imagery from his visual language all rendered with a minmalistic signpainting aesthetic. Along with a novel setup and display of the work (see above), Powers also created […]

Showing: George Condo – “Paintings & Sculpture” @ Sprüth Magers (Berlin)

Currently at Sprüth Magers, George Condo has a selection of new paintings and sculptures on display, his third solo exhibition in Berlin. The series of large-scale works are are the results of his ongoing reference to art history with the focus this time being Abstraction – i.e.: the lines of de Kooning, the forms and colors of Matisse, Tanguy and Klee, the all-over of Pollock, and Picasso. Rounding out the showing is a series of five bronze sculptures, taken from the familiar facial profiles seen in his imagery. The […]

Openings: Mars1, Damon Soule, Oliver Vernon – “Cosmic Terrain” @ Petaluma Art Center

Last month, the Petaluma Art Center north of San Francisco opened up an exhibition entitled Cosmic Terrain, the brainchild of Mars-1, Damon Soule, and Oliver Vernon. As part of the Furtherrr collective, the three friends are no stranger to collaborative works, which along with individual pieces, is what this show is about. The cosmic musings of Mars-1, organic patterns of Soule, and the chaotic abstractions from Vernon fuse and meld so well together, it is sometimes hard to differentiate where one artist’s vision starts and […]
