Showing: Emily Mae Smith @ Consortium Museum

A couple weeks ago in Dijon, France, the Consortium Museum opened the first ever institutional exhibition devoted to Emily Mae Smith. Bringing together about forty artworks made between 2014 and 2018 from private collections, the show gives a nice overview of the American artist’s recent output. Enjoy some more photos below but the video is a must watch as Smith talks in-depth about various aspects of her imagery like the importance of the female form in her work (sometimes addressed subtly), how her signature anthropomorphic broom figure started, […]

Previews: Kazuki Takamatsu – “The Way To Release From The Restraint” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On January 12th, Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting another new body of work from Kazuki Takamatsu in their Downtown Los Angeles showspace. The Way To Release From The Restraint features the Japanese artist’s surreal imagery created with his unique monochromatic depth mapping technique, starting digitally and ending with hand painting. His precociously seductive characters, mixed with symbols of death & violence, balance between the worlds of kawaii and darker themes. Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss Kazuki Takamatsu here.

Showing: “Absorbed By Light” @ Amsterdam Light Festival

One of the installations that grabbed the most attention this year at the Amsterdam Light Festival was a piece by artist Gali May Lucas (Design Bridge). Created with the help of sculptor Karoline Hinz, Absorbed By Light comments on our society’s increasing addiction to our mobile devices. Placed outside the Hermitage and on view through January 20th, the light sculpture plays off the theme of this year’s event – “the medium is the message.” The British artist further explains – “I see this every day in parks and in restaurants. in […]

Previews: Tom Sachs – “The Pack” @ Vito Schnabel Gallery

Continuing to build on his longstanding fascination with Switzerland (see his recent performance at Frieze London), Tom Sachs opened a show today in St. Mortiz. Hosted by Vito Schnabel Gallery, The Pack features the American artist applying his signature technique of bricolage to question the Swiss model of an ideal society. Repurposing found materials, Sachs creates sculptures that stem from “a desire to remake the world not as it is, but the way it ought to be.” An example of the complex layers of thought and planning […]

Releases: Slinkachu – “BRANDED” Edition

Over the holidays,  Slinkachu released a quickly sold out edition that cleverly satires our love for commercialism with his signature miniatures. The 20 unique BRANDED pieces mimic some of the original installations the London-based artist has left in Paris, Grottaglie (Italy), and Dubai and features some of the most sought after brands out there. Each was placed in a padded gift box with a signed and numbered mock receipt. Take a look at some of these in situ on the streets as well as a few of the […]

Upcoming: Osgemeos x Flying Steps – “Pictures Of An Exhibition” @ Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin)

Starting April of next year in Berlin, the artwork of Osgemeos will be part of an reinterpretation of Pictures at an Exhibition, Russian composer Modest Mussorksy’s most famous creation. Dovetailing nicely with the artistic duo’s love for hiphop culture, breakdance crew Flying Steps will be bringing the music to life with their choreography with OsG’s imagery as the backdrop. As you can see from the photos and video below, the Brazilian brothers went big with their stage design – something their fans will be sure to love […]

Showing: Josh Sperling – “Two Purple Tigers” @ Perrotin (Seoul)

For his first showing in Asia that is on view through the end of the year, Josh Sperling has unveiled a selection of his signature geometric forms executed on a series of shaped canvases. Entitled Two Purple Tigers, the exhibition from the American artist at Perrotin Gallery’s Seoul branch explores the sculptural potential of painting. Drawing from influences that range from Googie-style signs to the Memphis furniture trend of the 1980s to Keith Haring’s figures, the bold angular shapes and sinuous curves of the upstate New York-based artist intrigues […]

Streets: Banksy – “Season’s Greeting” (Port Talbot, Wales)

Making a statement during the holiday season in his own unique way, Banksy has created a new piece in  South Wales. Featuring a boy enjoying what appear to be snowflakes while trying to catch some on his tongue, the mural turns dark when you look around the corner and realize it’s actually ash from a burning dumpster, not snow. Surely a commentary on Port Talbot (one of the most polluted areas in the UK) where the piece is located, a video (seen below) from the […]
