Material Memory, a solo show from Jonathan Chapline opened last week at The Hole in New York City. Set against an eye-catching floor-to-ceiling gridded out gallery space, the Brooklyn-based artist’s digital aesthetics are perfectly accentuated by the Tron-like backdrop. Although he works with traditional subject matter like domestic interiors, still lifes, bathers, it is Chapline’s use 3D programs to render artworks followed by hand painting with acrylic and flashe on panel that make them unique, along with his masterful use of color gradients and lighting. Releases: Shok-1 x Bally Collection

With the help of tastemaker Swizz Beatz, Bally recently launched a new capsule collection with artwork from Shok-1. Known for his unique x-ray aerosol technique, the British artist recently traveled to Japan and Hong Kong (seen above) to promote the release of a selection of sweatshirts, joggers, totes, fanny packs, sneakers, and hats for both men and women. Returning to Allouche Gallery for another showing (see 2016), Ron English (featured) recently unveiled a selection of work from the last three years for his fans in New York. Delusionville features the locally-based artist’s pop culture infused imagery with iconic characters like the “Baby Hulk” and “MC Supersized”, oftentimes with references to art history. Additionally, the exhibition features a series of collaborative works with English’s friend Daniel Johnston, a singer, songwriter and artist with whom he has worked with in the past 30 years. Streets: Andrew Hem // UPEART (Finland)

Recently in Oulu, Finland, Andrew Hem (interviewed) completed by far the hardest mural he’s ever painted due to the challenging texture of the wall. Created for multi-city UPEA street art festival, Crystal Blue from the American artist has a pixelated feel to it due to the tiny rocks on the surface of the wall. Using masterful gradients of of red and orange in the background, the stunning piece really stands out from the surroundings. The genius of Banksy was on display again Friday night in London when his iconic Girl Red Balloon sold for a record £953,829. Right after the hammer, the piece from the British artist ran through what appeared to be a remotely activated shredder hidden in the unusually thick frame, leaving half of the work hanging from the bottom in strips. Last weekend, the Marciano Art Foundation opened an new expansive show from Ai Weiwei, his first major institutional exhibition in Los Angeles. Entitled Life Cycle, the showing includes old and new pieces, as well as a reworking of older concepts and techniques from the Chinese artist. The centerpiece is his sculptural response to the global refugee crisis, a massive boat made from bamboo used in traditional Chinese kite-making.
