Previews: Andrew Schoultz – “Full Circle” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Tonight (October 25th) in New York, Joshua Liner Gallery will be opening their second solo show with Andrew Schoultz. Full Circle includes works on paper, paintings, and new mixed media American flags set against a backdrop of a hand painted transformed space. Using familiar motifs like colorful concentric circles, the all seeing eye, brick structures, clouds, serpents, castles, and the aforementioned flag, the Los Angeles-based artist continues to weave a troubling and timely commentary on the social-political climate and the economics of globalism & capitalism. Streets: Okuda – “Air, Sea, Land” (Boston)

Earlier this month, Okuda completed his largest public installation project to date in Boston’s Seaport District. Curated by Justkids, the seven large-scale sculptures from the Spanish artist features his distinctive kaleidoscope of colors and geometric shapes. Air, Sea, Land is inspired by the intersection of elements at the dynamic waterfront neighborhood and continues exploring some of the street artist’s favorite themes – “the tale of life and coexistence, and the mythological edge where the animal kingdom encounters with the human world.” Discuss Okuda here.

Amsterdam’s KochXBos gallery recently opened a solo exhibition by local art hero, Dadara. On view through November 10th at Quint Gallery in La Jolla, Kelsey Brookes’ new show sees him take his work in a more dimensional direction. Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries continues the locally-based artist’s longstanding practice of looking to nature and science for inspiration. The painted freestanding and wall sculptures deal with viruses and the Fibonacci sequence, and feature Brookes’ signature psychedelic and colorful patterns. Showing though this weekend at Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles, Paco Pomet’s solo entitled Melancholia explores different states of light and their affect on the human psyche. Taking inspiration from vintage photos as a starting point, the Spanish artist has added his own surreal twist like what looks to be slow burning lava, strange auras, or the sun and the moon, changing the atmosphere of the scene completely. Material Memory, a solo show from Jonathan Chapline opened last week at The Hole in New York City. Set against an eye-catching floor-to-ceiling gridded out gallery space, the Brooklyn-based artist’s digital aesthetics are perfectly accentuated by the Tron-like backdrop. Releases: Shok-1 x Bally Collection

With the help of tastemaker Swizz Beatz, Bally recently launched a new capsule collection with artwork from Shok-1. Known for his unique x-ray aerosol technique, the British artist recently traveled to Japan and Hong Kong (seen above) to promote the release of a selection of sweatshirts, joggers, totes, fanny packs, sneakers, and hats for both men and women. Returning to Allouche Gallery for another showing (see 2016), Ron English (featured) recently unveiled a selection of work from the last three years for his fans in New York. Delusionville features the locally-based artist’s pop culture infused imagery with iconic characters like the “Baby Hulk” and “MC Supersized”, oftentimes with references to art history.
