First Look: KAWS – “GONE” @ Skarstedt Gallery

With the public opening of the heavily anticipated exhibition from KAWS set for tomorrow in NYC, here is a first look at what will be on display at Skarstedt Gallery. GONE features new abstracted paintings that at this point only subtly references the XX and iconic cartoonish characters that used to figure so prominently in the Brookyn-based artist’s work. These vibrantly colored compositions are paired nicely with four new large-scale bronze sculptures ranging from the familiar repositioned (like his head down Chum or smaller Companion sitting on a pedestal) […]

This Saturday evening (November 10th), Thinkspace Gallery will be opening a group show featuring Audrey Kawasaki, Atsuko Goto, Fuco Ueda, (seen above), Jolene Lai, and Stella Im Hultberg. Tonight at Diane Rosenstein Gallery in Los Angeles, the evolution of graffiti will be on view with a new solo show from one of the most subversive artists out there – KATSU. Entitled Drone, the exhibition continues the New York-based writer’s experimentation with incorporating technology into his work with paintings created by using a mountable remote sprayer on a quadcopter drone. Tomorrow (November 3rd), as part of a series of solos and group shows put on by Thinkspace at Glendale’s Brand Library & Arts Center, Stefan Thelen aka Super A will be presenting a selection of new paintings from his Trapped series. Entitled Domestication, the new body of work sees the Dutch artist continue to deconstruct cartoon, fairytale, or pop cultural archetypes by cleverly peeling away the surface while revealing the realistic version of the character inside. Last weekend in Copenhagen, Eighteen Gallery hosted the the opening of another great show – Geoff McFetridge’s Coming Back Is Half The Trip. The Los Angeles-based illustrator, designer and artist’s instantly recognizable distillation of the human form into basic shapes and colors once again takes center stage for this exhibition, work that takes inspiration from daily routines and patterns. Tonight at the Arsham/Fieg Gallery inside KITH’s SoHo store in New York City, Jean Jullien will be presenting a solo with an interesting concept. For this showing, the celebrated French graphic designer and illustrator will be displaying miniature paintings alongside appropriately sized sculptures and 3D models of Daniel Arsham and Ronnie Fieg leading to an optical illusion, especially when seen in photos. GIB which is “BIG” spelled backwards, will be on display through November 18. Via Hypebeast.

Last month, another POW! WOW! wrapped up in Rotterdam, their first event in Europe. POW! WOW! Rotterdam featured live music and a special exhibition in the HAKA building, but of course our focus is on the street art that was created at Keilewerf 1 and 2, an area that used to be an industrial part of the city. Along with artists from the Netherlands like Super A (seen above) and Telmo Miel (seen below), the international roster did their best to brighten up the grim concrete walls. […]

Releases: KAWS x Uniqlo x Sesame Street (Part II)

Following up on his previous collaboration (covered) with Uniqlo x Sesame Street, KAWS will be releasing a more extensive collection featuring the iconic cast of characters from the popular children’s show on November 19th.
