Upcoming: Mark Whalen – “Around The Bend” @ Chalkhorse

Tonight in Sydney, Mark Whalen (featured) will be opening a new solo show at Chalk Horse entitled Around The Bend. Continuing to refine his technique and evolve his art, the Australian born artist takes his work to the next level with shaped canvases featuring entangled characters and objects. These complement nicely his recognizable resined paintings with related imagery that continue his satirical commentary of modern society. Discuss Mark Whalen here.

After an Istanbul premiere in January of 2016, Banksy’s unofficial and unauthorized retrospective is currently on view at Amsterdam’s Beurs van Berlage. The Art of Banksy includes over 85 pieces selected by the elusive artist’s former agent, Steve Lazarides, making it the biggest show of Banksy work ever put together. Streets: Leon Keer (Dresden)

Street painting expert Leon Keer recently created a new piece in Dresden, Germany for the upcoming Magic City street exhibition. The Dutch artist is known for his anamorphic paintings on the ground that deceive the eye, with this latest piece being no different. Entitled Across the Border and painted in front of Scheune Dresden, it tells a story of hope and tolerance and is inspired by the famous Dresden Meissen porcelain figures. Discuss Leon Keer here.

Legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (renowned for movies such as Hell Boy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak) opened At Home With Monsters last weekend at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Streets: El Mac – “Spark of Divinity” (Sedona)

Recently in Sedona, Arizona, El Mac finished painting a mural that was commissioned by a local Whole Foods store. Near and dear to his heart, the piece featured a portrait of his mother-in-law and her granddaughter juxtaposed against a background inspired by the famous Beethoven Frieze by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt. His work was inspired by a “Beethoven symphony from 1824, which was inspired a poem, Ode To Joy, by Friedrich Schiller from 1785 which begins with the line – “Joy, beautiful spark of divinity…” – giving this mural its title. SDCC ’16: South Park 20th Anniversary Art Show

Streets: JR (Rio de Janeiro) – Part I

French artist JR (interviewed) recently completed a new installation in Rio de Janeiro utilizing an intriguing new technique lending the work a more three-dimensional feel. The clever new piece is based on a photo of Mohamed YOUNES IDRISS of Sudan (who didn’t qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics) performing a high jump over the top of building with the assistance of some scaffolding. A couple weekends ago at Thinkspace, new paintings from Cinta Vidal collectively entitled Gravities were unveiled in their project room. The small selection of works featured her signature gravity defying globe like structures and their inhabitants. There was also a piece with a field of floating furniture which was mirrored by similar imagery on a wall mural the Spanish artist painted for the exhibition. Photo credit: Birdman Photos.
