Streets: ROA (Sweden)

Last week, ROA was caught on the move again, this time popping up in Bromölla, Sweden where he painted a mural for Ifö Center as part of their Artist-in-Residence program. The project originated in the unoccupied floors of a factory with Belgium-based street painter being the first international artist to leave his mark on the external walls. Because the area is known for its prehistoric fossil finds, ROA decided to paint the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus, a fitting piece in his oeuvre of creature dissections. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Leading things off on this edition of our Streets: World Roundup is this new mural from Vhils (via Hookedblog) for the Phytology Project. The wall is situated on a side street just off Bethnal Green Road (the station end) in the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve and is part of a series of year-long artist commissions taking place in the reserve. Time for another segment of our Rewind feature. This edition’s highlighted video (via Colossal) comes from Icheon Ceramics Village in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, home to over 300 ceramics studios. The American Museum of Ceramic Art visited five of the artists (like Kim Seong-Tae seen above) last year to profile their work with some beautiful footage. It doesn’t happen often that Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) grabs a spray can, but when he does, he usually creates something exceptional. After not painting walls for quite some time, his newest mural, which he recently finished in Los Angeles, is definitely an example of that. Mexican artist Edgar Nández aka Saner, opened his first museum solo show on June 20th at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Luis Potosí, introducing over 25 new works. As is often the case with public murals when released into the streets, local writers will add their own “opinions” directly onto the works. This is what happened almost immediately to the Jeff Soto (interviewed) wall that was painted in South Central last week (covered) as you can see above. Ukrainian partners in art, AEC and Waone, who form Interesni Kazki (interviewed), recently put on a show entitled Inter Arma Silent Musae (get a closer look at the paintings here) at Studiocromie, the good people behind the Fame Festival. Held in a distinctive space in the small town of Grottaglie, the duo created vibrant and surreal works that mirror the style they are famous for in the streets. For those in Chicago to enjoy Lollapalooza and The Provocateurs opening tonight, make sure you also find time this weekend to take a look at the street art associated with the group exhibition. We already touched on the curator of the show Shepard Fairey and his new mural at Columbia College, but another artist’s work to check out is Los Angeles-based writer RETNA’s (featured) piece at 33 E.
