Basel Week Miami ’12: “Banksy Out of CONTEXT” @ CONTEXT Art Miami

Sure to rile up true street art fans everywhere, the CONTEXT Art Miami fair has gone ahead and approved the display of works purported to be pieces from Banksy (no Pest Control authentication obviously) taken from around the world (Israel, England, Los Angeles and San Francisco). Arranged by gallerist Stephan Keszler of Southampton, the works are placed strategically throughout the complex of tents, perhaps used by the fair to garner attention as it is a new offshoot of Art Miami. The showing appears to attempt to deflect blame […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Openings: “Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates” @ Wynwood Walls

Earlier this evening, AM stopped by Wynwood Walls to check out the opening of the Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates group exhibition inside the new Nicewalk Gallery space. The show featured backlit lenticular paintings (or photos) alongside some original works from selected artists (Aiko, Ron English, Swoon, How & Nosm, Logan Hicks, Kenny Scharf, Futura) who have painted murals at the complex. The title comes from a quote from Tony Goldman (founder of Wynwood Walls), who recently passed, with whom many of the artists included had an especially […]

Previews: Lucas Price – ‘T.E.A.M. Atlas’ @ Rove Gallery

Expect more pleasant surprises from Lucas Price as his latest body of work is about to be revealed in solo show T.E.A.M. Atlas (an acronym for The Earth As My Atlas). Lucas continues his exploration of cataloguing ephemera within his work, but this time it appears that the work is all rendered or drawn rather than collaged. Rove Gallery in Hoxton Square play host to this latest collection of works comprised of new oil paintings and carbon / graphite drawings. Lucas sent us some images of the […]

Streets: Escif (Spain)

Sparked by the recent pardoning of policemen convicted of beating an innocent man in Spain, Escif as painted a new mural in Valencia entitled Swan Lake. Taking inspiration from a recent video of the incident captured on tape (seen below) and set to the music of Swan Lake, the Spanish street artist has taken the liberty to add tutus to the officers in action. More detailed shots below… Discuss Escif here.

Openings: “Tonight We Won’t Be Bored” – 10 Years Of V1 Gallery

With all the great art that is scattered all over the world, it’s not often that you can see works from prominent artists in your home town – and even less likely you see them side by side. That is exactly the scenario we have in Copenhagen at the V1 Gallery as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a massive group show entitled Tonight We Won’t Be Bored. Take for example the wall above that has pieces from Todd James, Futura, DearRainDrop, and Kenny Scharf that […]

Showing: Vhils – “Devoid” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Vhils has certainly come along way since his days with a chipping hammer next to a Banksy in the Cans Festival of 2008. This is a perfect example of an artist being catapulted onto the main stage for all the right reasons. In recent years, he has had solo shows around the globe including – China, Paris, Brazil, and most recently back in his home away from home at Lazarides in London. There is one thing we can always count on from this young artist, […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Update: DALeast

With Basel Week Miami just around the corner, street and graffiti artists have been busying themselves the last several weeks on murals and walls throughout the area. One of those in town is the South Africa-based DAL who hasn’t hesitated to get up several of his kinetic creations including the piece above entitled Rug-A and the one below Osteoplasty.C. For those in New York, he will also be opening a show POWDER of LIGHT at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery next to Joe Sorren’s new work. Discuss Basel Week […]

Openings: Cyrcle. – “Organized Chaos!” (Los Angeles)

Last night, AM stopped by the private opening of Cyrcle.’s new solo show titled Organized Chaos! Taking place in Los Angeles, this new exhibition by the two-man collective focuses on the central idea of the cube and the way in which bees and flowers relate to society as a whole. It’s interesting to point out that unlike most exhibitions in which art is supposed to hang on a wall, this show actually invites the viewer to interact with the artwork itself. Various pieces are made up of […]
