Streets / Update: Escif (Part II)

On a torrid pace since our update only a week ago, Spanish street artist Escif has uploaded many new walls for his fans’ viewing pleasure. Painting with imagery that possesses a simplicity yet curious touch that makes the viewer wonder what the back story is or what the artist is trying to get across, the Valencia-based muralist continues to plaster his homebase with his work, sometimes accompanied with a short phrase or word. More photos after the jump…

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Brooklyn)

After Shepard Fairey hit up the streets of Manhattan last summer, he made a stop in the borough of Brooklyn as well. AM rode along to catch Mr. Obey working spots both big and small while him and his crew went to work on their community beautification campaign. We saw him push through a number of mediums, from his detailed hand-painted wheatpastes to his newer stencils without tire. Check out all the action captured for us by Joe Russo after the jump.

Setup / Giveaway: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

Olek is launching her first UK solo show this evening at Tony’s Gallery in East London. The wall-to-floor installation recreates living quarters, complete with bed, tables, picture frames and other domestic objects — all covered in brightly-coloured crochet. AM has been keeping track of progress over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result. The show’s title, “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone”, quotes from an appliquéd blanket produced by Tracey […]

Preview: KAWS – “Down Time” @ High Museum of Art

Continuing to raise his profile with each successive museum show (see The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth), Brian Donnelly, a.k.a. KAWS, moves on to his next stop – The High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Down Time will feature a 22-foot-high, site-specific mural where visitors are invited to watch the street-turned contemporary-artist paint live over the course of a week in early February. Other highlights will include a 24-foot-long triptych hung in the museum’s Robinson Atrium, a gallery installation […]

Streets: Cyrcle. – “Winter” (Los Angeles)

Last time we saw the Cyrcle. crew working the streets, they created a large scale mural in Culver City (covered), the same spot occupied by such street art luminaries such as Herakut, David Flores and recently Dabs Myla. But now the trio of young artists have moved closer to the  Downtown area of Los Angeles and have finished another wall project which may not be as big as their previous one but one which strongly continues to uphold the strong thematic qualities they’re known for […]

Openings: Evol & Teal – “Femme Fatale” @ Buckwild Gallery

Earlier this month, the Buckwild Gallery brought 7th letter member EVOL and Fame City writer TEAL together for a special event highlighting their different styles and their own brand of art. Titled Femme Fatale, the event was filled with a collection of both prints and original works by EVOL, a group of paintings by TEAL, and special collaborations between the two which touched upon the female portrait as the core idea. EVOL’s style has a watercolor-like quality but it’s impressive to see what he can […]

Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Glazed Paradise” @ Gestalten

Last week in Berlin, Gestalten hosted installation artist Mark Jenkins’ (interviewed) first solo show in Germany, Glazed Paradise. The American artist staged his startlingly lifelike sculptural works throughout the space to the delight of showgoers as they bravely roamed the gallery area. Also rounding out the night were limited edition offerings of his famous tape sculptures, photographs of his street work, as well as a lecture presentation from Jenkins. To coincide with the show, Gestalten released the artist’s first monograph The Urban Theater: Mark Jenkins which the […]

Openings: “Obey Your Master: A Metallica Tribute” @ Exhibit A

Last Friday, Exhibit A opened up its gallery doors to a multitude of artists all paying tribute to the legendary heavy metal band Metallica. Titled Obey Your Master, the exhibit featured artists such as Shepard Fairey, Travis Louie, David Stoupakis, Nicola Verlato, Brian Viveros, and Richard Villa III just to name a few. All the paintings and work of art on display were influenced by Metallica songs and it was clearly noticeable to see the respect that the artists had for their musical heroes. In […]

Set up as one of the premier art events this month, The Boneyard Project: Return Trip opens on January 28th at the Pima Art and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. After bringing you a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action last week, some more detailed photos have leaked that should serve to only stir up the desires of street and contemporary art fans even more – perhaps enough to encourage them to make the trek to the opening this Saturday. Again, the list of artists involved […]

Streets: Eine (Mexico)

Street typography connoisseur, Ben Eine, recently paid a trip to Mexico to get up on some walls. With almost a month to paint his signature lettering, the UK-based artist has done alot of damage so far with more to come. In particular, a long piece that spells out “The Bread Of The Rich Is The Struggle Of The Poor” caught out eye. See that piece and more after the jump…
