Mural Ordinance Panel Discussion @ Known Gallery (Los Angeles)

As murals go up by the dozens all across Miami during Art Basel Week, an important movement in the legalization of murals is taking place in the opposite part of the country, right in the heart of Los Angeles. Last night, the Known Gallery hosted a special event and group discussion focusing on a possible new mural ordinance which could affect the legality and acceptance of L.A.-based murals for years to come. Leading the discussion was Tanner Blackman, a city planner, who is pushing towards giving […]

More photos after the jump by Graffart…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Underbelly Show

Last night, AM attended the opening of the Underbelly show in Miami featuring an impressive lineup of artists who all have participated in the surreptitious underground street art and graffiti project in New York. Not only did each artist contribute a quality work to the show, most of them were large scale. Anchoring the exhibition near the entrance was a wall of flatscreen TV’s all simultaneously playing high speed timelapse loops of the artists as they worked on murals for the project. Many more photos […]

Openings: Interesni Kazki – “Nothing Special” @ Mid-City Arts

Last weekend, Mid-City Arts located in Los Angeles, California hosted the first U.S. exhibit by Ukrainian artists Interesni Kazki. Titled Nothing Special, the exhibit featured a collection of work which mirror their big scale murals both in style and in theme. Divided into different color palettes, each painting featured topics ranging from religion to greed. Perhaps these works of art do not carry the same feeling of awe that come from looking at their bigger projects. However, the same technique and attention to detail remain […]

With so much eye candy at the main fair, we had to split out photos into two helpings. Headlining this second set are these clusters from Bay Area legend Barry McGee at the Cheim & Read booth featuring some abstract representations of spray cans arranged in a new way with some novel patterns. Other strong pieces seen were a unique piece from Mark Ryden utilizing a new technique, an oil from Lisa Yuskavage, various shiny objects from Anish Kapoor, and much more. See it all […]
