Openings: Zevs – “Liquidated Logos” @ Art Statements Gallery (Hong Kong)

AM stopped by Zevs’ “Liquidated Logos” exhibition at the Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong to bring you an exclusive first look at this wild show. The French street artist known for “flipping the script” on world renowned brands such as Coca-Cola and Chanel, broadened his scope to include fashion icon Louis Vuitton. Using his trademark technique of “liquidation,” Zev showed the trendy residents of Hong Kong his reinterpretation of Murakami x Louis Vuitton’s famous “multi colore” pattern among one of many iconic logos he […]

Update: Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Sale Results

Yesterday’s Contemporary Day Sale (previewed) at Sotheby’s in London only had a few lots that AM was closely watching, but the results are a good sign for the overall market. In particular, Faile received a much needed boost with their large canvas “New York City 02” (Lot # 169) selling right in the middle of the estimate for 49,250 GBP and the smaller “NYC Butterfly Girl” on wood (Lot # 168) selling for 16,250 GBP, well over the 12,000 GBP high estimate. Faile has not […]

Auctions: Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction (London)

This Friday, June 26th, Sotheby’s (London) will be holding their prestigious Contemporary Day Auction with some amazing works from the top of the Contemporary Art food chain. As one of the top auction houses in the world, we come to expect the usual suspects such as: Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Damien Hirst, Yue Minjun, Takashi Murakami, Zhang Xiaogang and Richard Prince. A pleasant trend we wanted to note is Sotheby’s inclusion of urban art notables such as Banksy, Faile and Ryan McGinness in this auction. It’s interesting to […]

Video: Interview – Pharrell Williams / Murakami / The Simple Things – Basel Week Switzerland

Vernissage TV caught up with Pharrell Williams and interviewed him about the collaboration piece he did with Takashi Murakami and Jacob the Jeweler at Art Basel (Switzerland). Gems of this interview include where he says “bling, I do not wear,” how he was reluctant to call himself an artist, and his love for cupcakes (really, are they THAT good?).  Not sure we would have chosen the same “…simple things” he did, but we loved the sculpture. Discuss Murakami here.

Video: Takashi Murakami – “Superflat First Love”

If you liked the last Murakami x LV anime collaboration where little Aya’s cellphone is eaten by a giant LV Panda, who then swallows Aya into a psychedelic Murakami “Alice in Wonderland” world filled with creatures from his imagination, then you will like this new offering released yesterday from Kaikai KiKi entitled “Superflat First Love.” In a continuation of this story, set six years later, Aya now grown up, again encounters a strange creature who transports her to the 1800’s where she meets a young […]

Murakami x Pharrell x Jacob the Jeweler @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin – Basel Week Switzerland

Last time we were with Pharrell & Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, it was at Art Basel Miami. Over a half year later, they reveal this secret project at Art Basel Switzerland. Check this amazing collaboration between Takashi Murakami, Pharrell Williams and Jacob & Co – a mind blowing sculpture entitled “The Simple Things.” Think Superflat meets hip hop and Metroid. The sculpture is based on Murakami’s signature “DOB” character and features an onyx fiberglass husk with a pearlescent glow to compliment the vibrant rainbow colors which […]

Openings: Louis Vuitton Exhibition – A Passion for Creation (Hong Kong)

Last night, Louis Vuitton premiered a show they curated entitled A Passion for Creation at the Hong Kong Museum of Art with a shortlist of some of the top names in Contemporary Art.  Some of the artists included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Paul Chan, Cao-Fei, Yang Fudong, Gilbert & George, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Andreas Gursky, Pierre Huyghe, Bertrand Lavier, and Christian Marclay. Of course LV homeboys Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Stephen Sprouse had a “special section” of their own, comprising of Vuitton’s antique trunks and […]

Openings: Art Hong Kong 2009 International Art Fair

Continuing AM’s tour of Hong Kong, we made a stop at the Art Hong Kong International Art Fair. This vanguard Asian fair brings together top notch exhibitors from over 110 galleries. Much like our visits to Basel Miami and Armory NYC, in Hong Kong we experienced and saw work from some of the best talents in the art world. It was exciting to have such a collection of premium artwork centralized in one place. Check out all our exclusive coverage after the jump.

Viewpoints: Murakami, MOCA & Louis Vuitton Sued by Disgruntled Speculator

Last summer, the MOCA was sued by a disgruntled speculator, Clint Arthur, over the sale of some lithographic prints from Takashi Murakami’s retrospective. Arthur’s initial suit alleged that without proper documentation, the prints were just overpriced posters and the museum was misleading customers. The judge quickly dismissed the charges of fraud in the initial case.  Also, the MOCA has offered Arthur a refund with interest (which he refused, of course) and a certificate of authenticity for all their customers who wanted one. Now, Arthur is […]
