Todd James x Vistajet

Astute fans may have noticed that Todd James’ new exhibition opening this week in New York is being sponsored in part by VistaJet & Bombardier Aerospace, the same people behind a series of shows by RETNA in the past (covered here & here). At that time, you may also recall that RETNA painted the tail of one of Vistajet’s private charter planes (video here). Well, it looks like James may be creating his own sweet rendition of the project if these mock-up photos are evidence enough. Via Andy […]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Free To be You & Me” @ V1 Gallery (Part II)

Earlier this week, we shared some photos of the paintings from the current Todd James (aka REAS) exhibition, Free To be You & Me, at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen. Along with these works, the NY-based artist also created an installation of what he imagines to be the Vandal’s Bedroom , chock full of drawings and other ephemera that very well could represent James’ bedroom at one point in time. Street art fans who were lucky enough to have visited the historic Art In The Streets exhibition at the MOCA in Los Angeles may recognized […]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Yield to Temptation” @ The Standard (NY)

Todd James a.k.a. REAS has certainly lured in a good deal of folks into The Standard NYC this past month. REAS has been picking up steam over the years in both the street scene as well as the more structured world of commercial illustration, working with such recording artists as Iggy Pop, the Beastie Boys and Eminem, just to name a few. Most recently, REAS painted up The Standard Gift Shop storefront for his release and signing of his book titled Yield to Temptation, a title we […]

Fans of the New York-based Todd James will be able to greet their hometown hero 6-8 pm on Thursday night (September 20th) at The Standard in New York where he will be releasing his new book – Yield to Temptation. Openings: Todd James – “King of the Wild Frontier” @ Gering & Lopez

Last Thursday night, Todd James (aka REAS) unveiled a new body of works at New York’s Gering & Lopez. Entitled King of the Wild Frontier, this series takes another step forward from his previous showing with the gallery. Separated into two major parts, Todd moves on from his traditional medium of paper and continues his Somali Pirates motif on canvas which brought an impressive new dimension to his work as his colors and line-work popped even more than before. The second portion of the show […]

Teaser: Todd James – “King of the Wild Frontier” @ Gering & Lopez

Returning to NY for a showing at Gering & López, site of his show in early 2010, Street Market alumni Todd James will be presenting a whole new body of work on March 1st. King of the Wild Frontier will no doubt feature the artist otherwise known as REAS’ signature colorful and sardonic takes on various topics including perhaps politics and war. Discuss Todd James here.

Openings: “Pretty on the Inside” @ Paul Kasmin

Last week, AM attended the group exhibition curated by KAWS and Erik Parker, a unique project hosted by Paul Kasmin Gallery. The show Pretty on the Inside (teased) included works from seven American artists – Todd James, Tony Matelli, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, Karl Wirsum and of course, the two curators. The visually intense and almost organic feel of works served to focus the viewer on the raw beauty within. The show runs until August 19th, so make it a point to stop by if you’re […]

Openings: “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA (First Look)

This morning, the Los Angeles MOCA lifted the veil of secrecy on its highly anticipated “Art in the Streets” exhibition.  This first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art is the brainchild of Jeffrey Deitch (along with associate co-curators Roger Gastman & Aaron Rose) and was certainly one of the first enticing possibilities that came to AM’s mind when we first heard of his unconventional hiring as MOCA’s director early last year. Despite the inevitable quibbling about who was and who wasn’t included […]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Great Adventure” @ Galeria Javier López

Just hours ago, Todd “REAS” James’ show at Galeria Javier López opened it’s doors to the “Great Adventure”. It turns out, the adventure was a tongue-in-cheek way of referring to wars and the associated atrocities that come with it. Much like his show earlier this year in NY at Gering & López (covered), James’ cartoonish portrayal of the machinations of war include smiling tanks shooting out blood, funny-faced missiles romping around, nude female soldiers frolicking around in the mayhem, and much more. Seeing the chaos […]

Teaser: Todd “REAS” James @ Galeria Javier López

On Wednesday, Todd James aka REAS’ will be opening his first solo show in Madrid at Galeria Javier López. Judging from the show card and sneak peeks, the work will be a continuation of his last solo earlier this year in New York at Gering & López. Those attending the show will see the Deitch Street Market alum’s vision of a “Great Adventure” sure to include soldiers, cartoonish tanks, bombs, blood, women, and more… Discuss Todd “REAS” James here.
