Openings: Tom Sachs – “WORKS” @ Sperone Westwater

Last week, AM stopped by the architectural tour de force and New York showspace Sperone Westwater to take in the new solo from Tom Sachs. The painter and sculptor created a vast body of work influenced by a disparate range of historic objects and cultural icons which were recreated and remixed in his signature blend of whimsy and mastery of materials. Tomorrow, September 30th, the people of Brazil will be treated to a special exhibition timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the São Paulo Biennial. Today in Modena, Italy, Gallerie Civica is hosting the opening of KINDERGARTEN, a group show featuring the talents of Tom Sachs, Futura, Mode 2, Os Gemeos, Kostas Seremetis and Delta. It looks like each of the artists have taken time to bring some sculptural works and installations to the space, leading to a dramatic setting – one that should be enjoyable for “children” of all ages. It looks like The Selby, whose quirky studio visits we have featured here on AM in the past, have expanded into film. This time, Todd visits sculptor Tom Sachs, owner of an uncanny ability to cobble together functional contraptions out of accumulated components. It’s been a big couple of months for Faile. With so much going on, such as their collaborative show with BAST in London and their 10-year retrospective at Lazarides Gallery, AM is still trying to catch up with the scorching hot collective. We recently made the trip to Beverly Hills to view “Meet Me Inside” (previewed), a group show at Gagosian Gallery, to check out their wood puzzle pieces, as well as other spectacular art work by Gagosian’s A-list artists. AM stopped by “Stages” last night on the final leg of its journey. One of the hottest shows of Art Basel Week opened with many of the artists in attendance including Jose Parla, KAWS, Shepard Fairey (featured), D-zine, Futura, Rossom Crowe, Os Gemeos, Tom Sachs, and Eric White (seen above with his mother – a cancer survivor). The paintings will be auctioned off to benefit LIVESTRONG and the fight against cancer. More pics after the jump…

As anticipated, the highly praised “Stages” exhibition made it’s US debut yesterday in a beautiful pop-up space hosted by Deitch Projects in New York’s Soho district.
