Last week, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) premiered his debut solo show with Lazarides Rathbone entitled Moment of Impact. For his fans in London, the American artist has assembled a selection of provocative mixed media canvases and hyper-realist sculptures. Some pieces like his masked full-size figures are direct translations of his street interventions while others are produced for the gallery setting like the leg which seems to be bursting through a canvas or arms committing seppuku. From candlelit backrooms to small forest clearings, Incantation sees Roq la Rue Conjuring up a group show based on ritual and mysticism. Occultism is often seen as heretical to mainstream society, but the beliefs and practices are centuries old and firmly rooted in nature and our surroundings. The exhibition features artwork from over a dozen artists, including a few sculptural pieces like Mandy Greer’s black feathered Huldra Adornment. Other artists took the opportunity to bring the subject matter out of the darkness like Jeff Jacobson’s Opulent Hex and Redd […]
AM recently joined the masses at Robischon Gallery for the January 15th opening of Christian Rex van Minnen’s Golden Memes. The show is a homecoming for the New York-based artist, who brought his grotesque re-imagining of the Dutch Golden Age to Denver. The exhibition includes ten pieces of new work, most large in scale, making the bizarre imagery even more powerful. The show will be on display until March 7th, so stop by for a look yourself if you are in the area. Discuss Christian Rex van Minnen here.
Melbourne based Liam Snootle has been impressing us with his origami inspired creations both on the street and on canvas. Snootle uses spray paint in a range of contrasting tonal increments to create a series of angular shapes. The paintwork is tight and the depth created is very effective. These works are as much about colour theory as they are form and context. Red represents warmth and comfort whilst his blue paintings tend to be inspired by tension and anxiety. The shapes generated are not just borne […]
In conjunction with the relaunch of his website, SABER (interviewed) has made a new series of paintings and serigraphs ($1200 & $250 respectively) available for purchase through his webstore. Entitled Color Of Music, the new pieces are representative what the LA-based writer and artist has been working on as of late. Head over here if you want to add these to your collection. Along with Nick Farhi’s solo (covered), Neochrome Gallery is currently showing another show, Surface of Venus by Jamie Sneider, her first in Europe. With a MFA in Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts in NY, BFA from New York University, and two well received solo exhibitions stateside, this over-the-pond show is a new landmark for the Boston-born artist. Similar to her exhibition at Thierry Goldberg Gallery back in May 2014, this show is focused on her process based, abstract paintings. The title for the new […]
Last year, during a visit to San Francisco, AM got to visit the studio of artist Ben Venom. His unconventional approach to art making through traditional quiltmaking and embroidery practices first caught our eye a few years ago. Using heavy metal iconography in the form of cut-up t-shirts, Venom plays both hard and soft together by recontextualizing heavy imagery with soft fabrics in the form of quilts. Working from his home studio in the Upper Haight, Venom greeted us in a HM t-shirt and baseball cap. He fell into […]
Neochrome Gallery in Turin, Italy, recently opened the first solo show in Europe by American contemporary artist Nick Farhi. The show title FILA: Falling In Love Again, can be seen as kind of a humorous nod to famous Italian sport gear brand that is featured on two of the works, but even more, a reference to his romanticized subject matter. For this exhibition, New York-based painter showed a vast range of different works, highlighting his talent and versatility. Using oils as his basic and primary technique, […]

Last year, V Magazine sent over clothes to Ai Weiwei from 14 young designers carried by Dover Street Market, Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo’s concept store. The Chinese artist was given carte blanche to shoot the garments in any way he saw so he took the opportunity to reference his 2006/2008 Colored Vases series by using the same colors splashed on models wearing what he was sent. You can read more about the collaboration here, but AWW states – “Pouring a color on an outfit creates a […]
