AM recently attended the opening of Bronx graffiti writer COPE2’s show at bOb Gallery. Entitled Last Legend, the hometown legend showcased a body of work with a different style as we have seen recently from his tour of duty in Los Angeles and Copenhagen. The show runs until September 30th, so stop by the LES to catch it. Check out the full set by Joe Russo after the jump.
While in town for his recent London show, LUDO (interviewed) spent some time outside of the gallery in the urban environment where he feels most comfortable. His large-scale, hand-drawn wheatpastes infiltrated walls, billboards, and shutterfronts citywide. As with his recent stateside street tour, the green-tinged pieces seem to blend seamlessly into the already derelict city landscape, as if providing a snapshot of the future evolution of these plants and insects as they mutate and arm themselves to fight back against the species that has senselessly […]
Dave Kinsey, designer and fine artist, arrived in Los Angeles this week and created his latest work of art on the walls of the Standard Hotel, the same location painted in the past by Eric Haze (covered) if you remember. For his mural, Kinsey mainly used black and white, which can be seen driving down the streets of Downtown L.A. The artist had been hard at work beginning on Monday and his latest effort is simply a precursor of things to come as he will […]
Several weeks ago in New York, the impressive new paintings that we saw in-studio from Brian Viveros were finally displayed on the walls of the Last Rites Gallery. Entitled Returning Art To The Unclean, the new work all featured his portraiture of smoking hot femme fatales, posed and ready to do battle. For this show, many his “troops” sported tattoos, certainly appropriate for the setting, and as usual, Brian provided the appropriate head gear for them. As a bonus, the evening featured the Sunday Show […]
Last week, we brought you photos of the cat-inspired mural Jeff Soto (interviewed) painted while in France for the Les Enfants TERRIBLES exhibition. It looks like that wasn’t the last of the feline-inspired walls that Jeff endowed on the city of Lyon as he now sends us a second set of photos of this large Le Chat Terrible piece, one of the largest outdoor works he has done in recent memory. The industrious Riverside-based artist finished it in pretty much in one day after sketching it […]
Last week, Post No Bills held their third exhibition thus far entitled Reality Bites. The show centered around the work of various artists including Borf, Brett Amory, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, Mark Jenkins, Morley, and Ravi Zupa who supplied new limited edition prints as well as hand finished multiples. Among some of the night’s highlights, Shark (seen previously here) by Brookes was one which clearly got the attention of the visitors. Featuring the use of neon-colored lines and an array of colors, the piece was […]
Tomorrow night, September 23rd, marks the opening of the Sink or Swim benefit show for PangeaSeed, a grassroots organization based in Japan dedicated to educating and raising international awareness on the plight of sharks and the destruction of their habitat. The group show, which will be held at Spoke Art Gallery features artist like Dan May, Dave Kinsey, Ingri Haraldsen, Jen Lobo, Jessica Ward, Kevin Earl Taylor, Mike Stilkey, Paul Chatem, Roland Tamayo and more. Of note, the much anticipated Scorch I print from Josh […]
Vhils, whom we recently filmed working on a wall for the Post No Bills gallery in Venice, California has been spotted chiseling away on the other side of the pond in the UK. This newest piece was commissioned by the Urban Outfitters in Exeter and also features what looks to be a specially constructed facade to accommodate the Portuguese artist’s unique techniques. More photos after the jump…
This weekend, the Giant Robot 2 gallery in West LA will be hosting a benefit show featuring some artists that we have covered before here on AM like Edwin Ushiro whose piece you see above. Because of the down economy, the participants are putting in work to support this creative showspace on Sawtelle St. that have giving many emerging artists their first opportunities in the past. Included in the robots themed exhibition are other artist like APAK, Gary Baseman, Buff Monster, Jon Burgerman, Luke Chueh, […]
Rounding out his time in Croatia, where a super-sized seeing device was already gifted to the Central European country, two more murals were completed by Phlegm before heading back to the UK. In trademark black and white, we see the Sheffield-based street artist furthered his fantastical storyline with his eerie, yet endearing cast of characters. Another brilliant flying machine, akin to one painted in London last week, is the stand out, highlighting his skills in going large while not ignoring the intricacies in the minor […]
This Saturday night, Kukula returns for her second solo show at the Corey Helford Gallery after a sold-out affair in 2009. Entitled Lonely Opulent Things, this new body of work consists of 12 paintings, including her largest works to date. As evidenced by the title and a limited-edition Jacquard tapestry available at the show, the exhibition celebrates the excesses of French aristocracy, inspired by a recent trip to Versailles. She states she wanted to explore “the beauty of objects and how we make them parts […]
Currently showing at Lehmann Maupin is Home Within Home, the latest exhibition by Korean artist Do Ho Suh. The show is centered around two amazing sculptural installations that each deal with the artist’s feelings of cultural displacement stemming from the time when he moved from Korea to the United States to study art. Suh physically represents the culture clash he experienced in the piece entitled Home Within Home: an incredibly detailed dollhouse version of his student home in Providence, RI, that has been partially destroyed […]
