StolenSpace held a pretty special closing party this week for the Original Cultures show, the opening of which we attended a couple of weeks back. Will Barras, DEM and Ericailcane took to the icy cold streets of London for an outdoor painting event to conclude the gallery show. We were also privileged to go along to fellow Original Cultures collaborator Hiraki Sawa’s studio earlier in the day to take a look at the artists (helped by Allesandro Micheli) hand-finishing a small number of the collaborative prints […]

It’s hard to believe it’s already been five years since one of our favorite magazines released their first issue. Just like Jonathan LeVine Gallery last month (covered), Hi-Fructose is celebrating their five year anniversary with a group show with artists that have been featured in their publication since the very beginning. With so many great artists included, there are bound to be some great pieces like the piece above from Mia (interviewed). The show opens on Saturday, March 13th at Copro Gallery. Full list of […]

Last weekend, Camille Rose Garcia kicked off her book signing tour at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. There were long lines as fans queued up to get her illustrated “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” book signed and to check out the accompanying exhibition entitled “Down The Rabbit Hole”. As she mentions in our interview with her last week, she is a big collector of books so it seems that she was a perfect choice for this project – especially after seeing what a fantastic fit […]

West Hollywood’s fledgling, ambitious, and architecturally magnificent Prism gallery opened its second exhibition this past weekend. Delivering on their promise to show internationally recognized artists, Prism hosted the controversial and legendary Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, with a selection of about 70 of his works. The Tokyo-based artist is one of Japan’s most accomplished, notable, and respected photographers. His photos explore topics including love and sex and features his wife, Yoko, in much of his work. More after the jump…

Undoubtedly, you all have been waiting for more Armory Week ’10 coverage, and we apologize for the delay, but after nearly a week of visually-overloaded days and late nights, we had to take a break before getting to it. But now, without any further ado… In the end, we hit six fairs, including Pulse, Scope and Volta. The main attraction, of course, was The Armory Show, which was housed on two piers on Manhattan’s West side. Pier 92 focused on modern art (generally, the super […]

Based on pictures from Robbo and his crew, it looks like they have gone and modified more Banksy pieces, warping their meanings. If you remember this all started in Camden with a stencil Banksy put up over a vintage Robbo tag, with the ensuing retaliation (here & here) from Robbo. Not sure how long the graffiti artists plans to continue defacing pieces from Banksy, but it seems a little much now… More images after the jump…

Sloan Fine Art will be welcoming a new body of work from Edwin Ushiro at the end of this month entitled “”At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home.” Ushiro’s nostalgic and hauntingly beautiful works are exactly that – paintings based on childhood memories and folklore typically involving ghost stories or the supernatural. For this exhibition in New York, he will “focus specifically on the mystery and histories held by abandoned and forgotten places” of course utilizing his special technique that creates the signature […]

This past March 4th will end up being a significant date in the history of Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The standard-bearer of all contemporary art galleries in the world premiered a major addition to their 90210 space. In addition, Andreas Gursky, one of the most well-known artists working in the photography medium, opened his newest major solo exhibition at the gallery. The expansion, designed by Richard Meier, features 5,000 square-feet of gallery space added on to the already existing 6,600 square-foot building. The new […]

Sometimes, we come across an artist that is making work so fresh and exciting that it completely stops us in our tracks. This is no mean feat when the setting is Basel week. The sheer scale of the event is a bombardment of the senses and after a while you start to forget what you saw where. Not so with Wayne White’s work though. His unforgettable landscape and textural compositions inspired us and proved to be one of the most enjoyable viewing pleasures of the […]

February was a frigid month and many people fought furious snow storms in their part of the county. Fortunately, we at AM had a chance to warm you up with some hot stories on your computers. As usual, the staff picked some of the juiciest stories of the month in another edition of Second Helpings. Get served after the jump…

UK street artist D*Face (featured) recently stopped by Los Angeles to install some well-timed “Zombie Oscar Statues” last week. The two seven foot sculptures were installed in two locations – atop Runyon Canyon and in the parking lot of the famous Mel’s Drive-In in Hollywood near where the 82nd annual Academy Awards (Oscars) were being held at the Kodak Theatre. Our friend, Jeremy Kaplan (GM of Subliminal Projects) was along for the ride as D*Face worked his version Hollywood magic. The two installations were explained in detail […]

On Saturday night, Deitch Projects hosted the opening for the ever talented contemporary artist: Rosson Crow. Her latest show “Bowery Boys” featured her talented nostalgic snapshots of the streets of lower Manhattan. The beautifully rendered works featured periods from the 1800’s to the current landscape depicting the gritty urban facades of the “Big Apple”. As AM previewed last week through a detailed studio visit, her bigger-than-life style had us excited to see the rest of the show. Fully utilizing the grand space that Deitch Projects is renowned […]
