Aakash Nihalani will be bringing his unique use of colored tape as a geometric artform to the Carmichael Gallery for a joint show with Mark Jenkins on January 21st. From the sound of things, attendees of the show, entitled “On & Off (Often On)”, will be seeing something fresh and exciting from Aakash for this new body of work. We’ll have more on this later but for now, check out a recent video he did with the good people of Babelgum after the jump…

AM had the honor this past weekend of visiting Mike Shine‘s historic “surf shack” as the artist was preparing for his latest installation, opening today at SFMoMA. Nestled away in the heart of Bolinas, Mike Shine has created for himself the ideal Nordic retreat, the perfect getaway for him and his family of artists. Purchased six years ago, the surf shack has become an institution in and of itself. With recreations built for the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Mollusk Surf Shop, White Walls, […]

Andrew Hem (interviewed) is opening an expansive show tonight at LeBasse Projects featuring paintings, drawings, and sculptural work. Entitled “One Leads to Another,” the exhibition was influenced extensively by his recent trip to Cambodia. Through his artwork, Andrew asks what if the millions of people that died during the Khmer Rouge period, especially the children had lived on instead? How might things have been different?  Be sure to read more about this on the Erratic Phenomena blog. Also, check out some preview images after the […]

Mark Jenkins, who recently did some work in Moscow, will be returning to the States for a show at the Carmichael Gallery. He’ll be bringing in some fresh installation art like the “Spokes” piece seen above for his show entitled “Meaning is Overrated.”  Definitely mark down January 21st and plan to attend the opening as he will be showing with another great artist – Aakash Nihalani. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.

Ryan McGinley, famed photographer, but also aspiring feature film director, recently directed a video (watch it after the jump) for luxury knitwear brand Pringle of Scotland.  It stars Tilda Swinton (whom McGinley has long admired) in a Pringle of Scotland dress and features signature McGinley scenes, such as forest, rocks, waves, and caves.  Sorry, no nudity this time.  It’s been a busy time for the artist, as he also recently had a showing at Art Basel Miami (where he was scheduled to speak) and is […]

Saturday night, AM had the pleasure of attending the openings of two exciting new shows at Chelsea’s Joshua Liner Gallery. In the main gallery was the “Further” group exhibition, which features Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave and Tomokazu Matsuyama. As we mentioned in our preview, the show consists of artists selected for an upcoming book of the same name highlighting contemporary abstract painting and themes of spiritualism and mysticism. Although the selected artists each has a unique and […]

The recent appointment of Jeffrey Deitch as the new Director of MOCA has spurred much rumor and speculation regarding the continued operation of Deitch Projects and their scheduled exhibitions.  It has been confirmed by the museum and by Mr. Deitch himself that all commercial activity on his end will cease by June 1, 2010, meaning Deitch Projects as we all know it will shutter. What happens to his staff and stable of artists is still yet undetermined, however, we at Arrested Motion have received word […]

Seeing that Phil Frost’s epic show at the PRISM with Barry McGee is still showing, it’s good timing for him to collaborate with Undefeated, mega clothing and lifestyle brand, on their billboard project. Frost joins the long list of luminaries such as Kehinde Wiley, Robert Williams, Jose Parla, Os Gemeos, Kaws, and Raymond Pettibon in designing the sign above the Undefeated store location on La Brea in Los Angeles. Another image after the jump…

Krista Huot (interviewed) opened her first-ever solo show this past weekend at Gallery1988SF.  AM was on hand the day of the opening to catch up with Krista as she was putting the finishing touches on her latest body of work.  “Nepenthe,” an ancient drug used to cure sorrow and depression through forgetfulness, is truly a fitting name.  By reminding and reinterpreting the forgotten stories and fairy tales of our youth, Huot effectively reinvigorates our imaginations, and as promised, cures our sorrow with her playful and […]

2010 is upon us and it looks to be an exciting year in the art world. Things officially get kicking this week with a slew of openings taking place around the globe. Leading the charge this weekend is the new body of work from Josh Keyes opening at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC this Saturday. Featuring some of his largest work yet, and his first self portrait, this show is not to be missed and is expected to sell out in advance of the opening. […]

Another show we are looking forward to in March is Andrew Schoultz’s solo in Italy at the Jerome Zodo Contemporary.  Entitled “Crisis,” the exhibition opens on March 11th and will include this amazing large scale (11′ x 24′) piece “Monument Yard. (Monument to Turbulent Times)” which was about one and a half years in the making. It was originally on view at the Torrance Art Museum for an exhibition titled “Zoom” and will now make it’s way to Milan. Take a closer look at some […]
