Highlights: Recommended Openings for this Weekend

With the quiet summer art season in full effect, the list of recommended shows is shorter than usual but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any quality shows. For example, take a look at the possible crazy installs coming up for David Choong Lee as he gets ready for his show at LeBasse Projects this weekend. As the art world becomes increasingly year-round, eventually there will probably be no lulls in the calendar at all. More listings after the jump…

Openings: Naoto Hattori – “Super Bionics” @ Copro Gallery

Opening concurrently with Rob Sato last Saturday night at Copro Gallery was “Super Bionics” from Naoto Hattori. Attendees of the show were treated to the delightfully grotesque yet beautiful world of Hattori where floating heads, transformed animalia, and a melting pot of organic psychodelia is the norm. Take a look at more pics after the jump…

Openings: Rob Sato – “Muscle Memories” @ Copro Gallery

Last weekend, AM stopped by Copro Gallery to check out the new body of work from Rob Sato entitled “Muscle Memories.” This collection of watercolors, limited editions, and even some works on slides bombarded attendees with the stunning individual detail of each piece, yet if taken as a whole when taking a step back, the kinetic clusters define intricate compositions and gives a look into Sato’s imagination. More pics after the jump…

Preview: “Summer Group Show” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

August in NYC is not typically the time to see great new art, as galleries tend to schedule group shows in order not to waste their A material on the few gallery goers left in town instead of summering in the Hamptons. Past experience, however, has shown us that the Joshua Liner Gallery defies expectations with their summer show, taking the opportunity to set the stage for their upcoming season, by exhibiting a strong selection of their regular roster and introducing us to a few […]

Teaser: Yoskay Yamamoto @ Roq La Rue

After a great solo showing at LeBasse Projects, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) is already hard at work for his coming show at Roq La Rue September 10th. Showing along side peer Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), Mr. Yamamoto is set to unleash a new set of images for Seattle’s finest. We stopped by Yoskay’s downtown studio for a sneak peek at his new body of work. Check out a closer look at the fish after the jump.

Update: Mark Dean Veca – “When the Shit Hits the Fan” @ Western Project

AM stopped by Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) studio last week to take a look at the new body of work for his show at Western Project, opening September 18. When we first brought you a teaser image last month, there wasn’t a name for the show, but now it’s tentatively entitled “When the Shit Hits the Fan.” The paintings for the show fit thematically together and will make more sense of the recent work you have seen from Mark. Keep it locked here as we’ll […]

Interviews: Eric Joyner

As we mentioned a couple weeks ago, Eric Joyner will be opening his newest show at Corey Helford this Saturday, August 14th. We had the opportunity to get together with Eric for a session of questions and answers as well as getting an advanced look at some of the pieces in this show. He took time to explain his subject matter, talk a little about his influences, and much more. Check the full interview after the jump…

Showing: Daniel Danger – “they will take it back” @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

One of the most skilled artists out there in capturing atmosphere and emotion in their work, Daniel Danger (interviewed), opened his latest solo show last week at Gallery 1988. The body of work entitled “they will take it back” included originals, ink works, new prints, and a new art toy (seen perched precariously on Daniel’s head). More photos after the jump…
