Openings: Todd Schorr – “American Surreal” @ San Jose Museum of Art

This past Thursday, AM took a trip down to the San Jose Museum of Art to visit Todd Schorr (interview & studio visit) and check out “Surreal Night,” a celebration of his 25 year retrospective currently on display. While there, we were able to attend the panel discussion, meet Todd, pick up a copy of his latest book, American Surreal and take some pictures of his major retrospective exhibition. Openings: INSA x Nike – “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places”

Last night, Nike Sportswear and Protein had a preview opening for INSA’s latest exhibition “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places.” The London pop-up show is part of the IAM1 Project by Nike and celebrates the launch of the Nike Air Maxim, which is a hybrid remake of the classic Air Max 1. AM stopped by Zevs’ “Liquidated Logos” exhibition at the Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong to bring you an exclusive first look at this wild show. The French street artist known for “flipping the script” on world renowned brands such as Coca-Cola and Chanel, broadened his scope to include fashion icon Louis Vuitton. Openings: “Celeritas” @ SURU

The motorcycle culture themed “Celeritas” show (previewed) and silent auction held last weekend at SURU in Los Angeles was a huge success, raising $66,000 for Riders for Health, a non-profit that funds the transportation of medical personnel to remote communities in Africa. The centerpiece of the show was a 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa customized by Barry McGee coupled with a mannequin draped in styling Darren Romanelli fashioned motorcycle leathers. Openings: Yumiko Kayukawa – “God from the East” & Ben Tour @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Over the weekend, AM attended the opening of two shows at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. In the front gallery was Yumiko Kayukawa’s “God from the East,” which consists of a new collection of small- and medium-sized paintings. Kayukawa’s work blends modern and traditional aspects of Japanese culture with a colorful, playful style.  In gallery two, Vancouver-based artist Ben Tour is exhibiting a selection of dark and free-flowing portraits of women on canvas and paper, as well as a large-scale mural. Openings: Stella Im Hultberg – “Memento Mori” @ Thinkspace

Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) made her solo return to Los Angeles this past Friday with “Memento Mori” (previewed) at Thinkspace Gallery. Greeting patrons as they walked through the door was an impressive mural featuring Stella’s luscious lipped women on a “nature-esque” green backdrop – a small taste of the breathtaking body of work that awaited them. While in the UK, AM made a special visit to the Serpentine Gallery to get an exclusive viewing of “Popeye Series, Jeff Koons first major exhibition in London. Openings: “Monster?” @ Copro Gallery

Last night, the “Monster?” group show (previewed) curated by Travis Louie (interviewed), opened at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica to a full house of monster lovers. They weren’t disappointed as artists took creative means to paint and sculpt their versions of of the theme, all the way from hideous vampires and Frankenstein to Charlie Brown and childhood piano teachers. Shepard Fairey Works a Plea in Boston

After a five month ordeal with Boston authorities, Shepard Fairey’s latest drama has finally come to an end. Shepard, who was arrested on January 22 at the ICA (reported), was initially charged with over 30 counts of vandalism, tagging and destruction of property. Between April and June, the courts threw out over 21 of the charges against Shepard. This past Friday, Fairey consented to a plea deal that will dismiss the remaining 11 vandalism charges. Openings: EINE – “The A – Z of Change” @ Carmichael Gallery

AM enjoyed the intense visual experience of EINE’s Los Angeles debut solo show “The A – Z of Change” (previewed) which opened at Carmichael Gallery this past Thursday. The buffet of vibrant colored squares strewn across the walls served as the perfect backdrop for his amazing canvas pieces and the powerful imagery contained therein.
