Openings: Antony Micallef – “Becoming Animal” @ Lazarides

It’s not that often that you feel completely blown away when you walk into a gallery, but that was the feeling AM experienced when we first walked into Lazarides (Rathbone Place) at the opening of Antony Micallef’s epic solo show, “Becoming Animal.” We’d been anticipating this show since well before we interviewed Antony (read that here) a couple of weeks back, and hearing him talk about his motivations behind the show only whet our appetite even more. He told us that this show was all about him [...]

Interviews / Preview: Antony Micallef – “Becoming Animal” @ Lazarides London

One of London’s most anticipated shows of the year is almost upon us with Antony Micallef’s “Becoming Animal” opening this week at Lazarides gallery’s Rathbone Place location. We certainly got excited after seeing the new image of one of the show pieces he recently put on his website here – and it certainly seemed to fit with the dark tone he described to us. This is the first solo outing from Micallef since his sell out show in Los Angeles, “Impure Idols,” in 2007 where [...]

Even those on the invite-only guest list had to queue outside for a chance to get in and see the latest installment of the “Outsiders” show. The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228. A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere. Via a mysterious website which poses as a legit business, people can get free tickets to the event via a hidden link that allows the visitor to participate in the project. The show includes work by ATMA, Mark Jenkins, Antony [...]

Some scorching hot pieces lined the gallery’s walls for the exhibition, including: a rare Banksy canvas, a KAWS ad disruption, boxes and screen-printed collages from Faile, to originals by Barry McGee and Micallef and much more. Visiting the gallery was like seeing a modern day museum retrospective of the last five years in urban art. Truly amazing. AM has all the [...]
