Openings: “Wreck The Walls” @ Subliminal Projects

Subliminal Projects played host to an intriguing collection of original work from artists who have been known to bend rules and break molds in their respective fields. Featuring artwork by Ryan McGinness, Blek Le Rat, David Ellis, Erik Foss, Eric White, Evan Hecox, John Van Hamersveld, Greg Lamarche, Jason Alper, Martha Cooper, Retna, Skullphone, SWOON, Tim Biskup and many more, Wreck the Walls (previewed) served as a merging of artistic niches rarely exhibited together under one roof. It’s always nice to see multiple artistic movements, [...]

Preview: “Wreck the Walls” @ Subliminal Projects

Graciously staying open and providing an art viewing opportunity for the LA area during the holiday season, Subliminal Projects will unveil Wreck the Walls this Saturday, December 11. The group exhibition of over 30 “rebelious pioneers” will include work from Blek Le Rat, David Ellis, Erik Foss, Eric White, Evan Hecox, Greg Lamarche, Jason Alper, Martha Cooper, Retna, Skullphone, SWOON and Tim Biskup. An assortment of well established contemporary artists combined with a dash of street art and pop-surrealism should provide for a diverse collection [...]

Preview: Viva La Revolucion @ MCASD

AM headed down to San Diego on Friday morning to catch the press preview of Viva La Revolucion at MCASD (check out our street coverage here). It was great to wander around the Jacobs Building and get a sneak peek of everything the artists have been working on indoors after seeing all the amazing pieces that have been popping up on the streets of the city. Pedro Alonzo, the exhibition’s curator, led a talk around the museum and spoke about the different artists and their work. Shepard Fairey, David Ellis, Stephan [...]

Teaser: “Viva La Revolucion” @ MCASD

San Diego, hold on to your hats because the urban art movement is about to move into your neighborhood. This summer, the MCASD will be holding an exhibition showcasing some of the best art the streets have to offer. Openings: Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The beautiful weather and the promise of great art seemingly brought out all the five boroughs Thursday night for the opening of the Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition – which was so large that it overflowed Liner’s third floor space into an entire other gallery on the floor below – leaned toward presenting individual works from the diverse group of artists, instead of toward collaborative installations as expected. Of course, pieces by stars of the original scene such as David Ellis, Swoon, [...]

Preview: The Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Preview images from the much anticipated Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery have started leaking out and from the looks of the individual pieces from Swoon, David Ellis, Kenji Hirata and others, the exhibition is not surprisingly going to be a stunner. But when all the amazing artists that make up the Barnstormers are together in one place, the total will undoubtedly be so much more than just the sum of the individual pieces. What exactly the end result will look like is anyone’s guess [...]

Armory Week ’10: Scope New York

We attended the preview of Scope New York last Wednesday and visited the fair again on Saturday, and with the exception of stand-out booths by Anonymous, David B. Smith and newcomers Jackie Paper, found the fair to be somewhat disappointing overall. The show seemed small, not just relative to the enormous size of this year’s Armory Show, but compared with this year’s Scope Miami or last year’s Scope NY. And the overall selection and quality seemed to be down as well, with not a lot [...]

Benefit: “Idea for the Here and Now” @ Fountain Fair

Christina Ray Gallery (formerly Glowlab) and Fountain Art Fair are behind an unique group exhibition to benefit Transformazium, an emerging collaborative arts center in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The show, called “Idea for the Here and Now,” will feature prints by David Ellis, Steve Powers, Jose Parla, Swoon and others based on the idea of “the transformation of resources into tangible social and economic benefits for small communities and the world at large.” The limited edition screenprints were all hand-pulled at the Braddock Screen Printing Shop, and [...]

Teaser: Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Just recently, the Joshua Liner Gallery gave notice that they were revising their schedule to include an exciting surprise show opening March 18 by the NYC/Tokyo-based artist collective The Barnstormers. According to insider information leaked to AM from a reliable source, the collaborative group (which includes nearly everyone whose anyone in the street art and associated scene) will be creating individual pieces and site-specific installations that will likely span beyond the walls of Liner’s spacious Chelsea gallery into another gallery space in the building. This [...]

Video: David Ellis “Musical Trash” Installation

David Ellis must be one of the most versatile artists out there with his multifaceted approach to art. You may remember his work as a street artist in the impressive “graffiti-animation” video he did with Blu at the Fame Festival last year. Or perhaps you enjoyed his gallery work for New Image Art last summer? What stands out most for us recently though was the the huge trash sound installation we experienced that he created for the Anonymous Gallery booth at the SCOPE art fair [...]
