Basel Week Miami ’13: “Affordable Care” @ Mana Wynwood

One of the shows we visited during Art Basel Week was Affordable Care, curated by Flaunt Magazine. Held in the Mana Wynwood complex in Miami’s downtown district, this group exhbition explores the contradiction of the words “affordable” and “care”. This pairing of terms in the current world is sort of an oxymoron in a time of digital missives, healthcare glitches, and artistic free-for-all. The event brought together an interesting mix of artists working with diverse mediums, including photography, digital, performance art. The participants were Ben Jones, Melanie Pullen, […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Rewind: Aug 6 – Aug 12

Photographer Ryan McGinley, who has been flexing his film-making muscles as of late, recently hooked up with EDUN (fashion label of Ali Hewson and her husband, U2 singer Bono) to produce a video for their Fall/Winter 2012 collection. The aesthetic used should be familiar to fans of McGinley’s photo series featuring his models posing with wild animals, first introduced with his Team Gallery solo, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere (covered), and further developed with the inclusion of wild animals during his Life Adjustment Center (covered) […]

Art HK ’12: David LaChapelle – “Seismic Shift” @ Paul Kasmin

When attending top-tiered fairs such as Art HK, one can expect to encounter many notable works by some of the top names in the industry. Once in a while, a piece will stop you to take a closer look. Famed photographer David LaChapelle submitted a photograph that took front and center at Paul Kasmin’s booth. Entitled Seismic Shift, the ginormous photograph measured ten by four feet and it wasn’t the size that caught our eye, but its contents. LaChapelle’s latest creation drew upon many of the […]

Previews: David LaChapelle – “Earth Laughs In Flowers” @ Fred Torres Collaborations

Coming up on February 23rd, New York’s Fred Torres Collaborations will unveil the Earth Laughs In Flowers series of photos from David LaChapelle for the first time in the United States. The ten large-scale still life photographs were inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem Hamatreya in which flowers are a way in which nature expresses its hatred for human ignorance and their desire to control the earth. LaChapelle’s method of composition for this set of works are inspired by baroque still life painting, although he […]

Retna x David LaChappelle for Vanity Fair

So, it looks like the new spread for Vanity Fair that we mentioned a while back finally materialized. Taken by David Lachapelle (who just opened a show at PRISM), the photograph features RETNA (featured) in front of his West Hollywood mural (covered) with a little help from photoshop it seems. As an added bonus, we have for you after the jump a video that surfaced recently featuring footage of RETNA’s WeHo mural as well as an interview…

Openings: David LaChapelle – “Negative Currency” & “Recollections in America” @ PRISM

David LaChapelle is a chameleon when it comes to his work. Over the course of his storied career, the New York photographer has experimented with, and excelled in, nearly ever photographic style and technique imaginable. His wide arcing narrative couldn’t be more evident than with his most recent exhibition at PRISM, which opened last night at the swanky Los Angeles gallery. Pairing two bodies of work – Negative Currency and Recollections in America – as different in look and feel as they are similar in […]

Previews: David LaChapelle – “Negative Currency / Recollections in America” @ PRISM

Last seen at the opening of The Raft in Hong Kong back in May, as well as stopping off shortly thereafter in NYC for his Lever House installation, David La Chapelle is primed to bring a selection of relevant works from perhaps lesser known periods of his artistic career to Los Angeles. Opening tonight, September 27th at the architecturally brilliant PRISM, the New York-based photographer will revive two distinct bodies of work, Negative Currency and Recollections in America. Using the enlarger in a darkroom for […]
