LA Art Show ’14: Littletopia

Last week when AM stopped by the LA Art Show, we made sure to pay a visit to the special Littletopia section curated by Red Truck Gallery. Featuring an array of artists and art that is seldom seen at the event, this part of the fair saw a healthy and steady stream of visitors. Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Take a look at some more photos below… Discuss this show here.

Openings: “The Baxter Collection” @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue changed it up for this month’s opening. The works on display are from the personal collection of the Baxter family, who are selling some of their collection to move overseas. The pieces in question were collected over the past decade and represent a who’s who of the pop surrealism scene including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Audrey Kawasaki, Camile Rose Garcia, Lori Earley, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Liz McGrath, Glenn Barr, Donald Roller Wilson, Kukula, Ana Bagayan, Fuco Ueda, Joe Sorren, Brian Despain, and Femke Hiemstra. […]

Releases: “HEROES & VILLAINS”

According to our friend Amanda Erlanson, the long awaited HEROES & VILLAINS book has finally been released. In it, photographers Tatiana Wills and Roman Cho take snapshots of many of the artists we follow here on AM. Not only are the resulting portraits technically sound, the duo were able to capture the essence of each artist – for example, Shawn Barber (featured) and his tattoos, Tiffany Bozic and her bird, or SHAG (interviewed) in a modern retro setting. We’ve seen the publication in person and were quite […]

Showing: Jonathan Viner & Elizabeth McGrath @ Sloan Fine Art

AM stopped by the LES district last week in New York to catch the latest show from Jonathan Viner and Elizabeth McGrath held at Sloan Fine Art (previewed). Jonathan’s exhibition Computer Science tugged at our heart as it brought back nostalgic memories of a time that has faded from our view by taking us on a retro journey when our parents were young, cool and of course rocking the over-sized electronic systems. Viner’s style seemed to capture that tinted and earthy style of the seventies […]

“Heroes & Villians” Book

Ever wonder how your favorite artist looks in person (like the beautiful Liz McGrath seen above)? Well, unless you live LA, Miami, SF, NY, or London, then chances are slim that you will get to meet them at an art show or event. While most people focus on the art, “Heroes & Villians” photographers Roman Cho and Tatiana Wills decided to center their attention on the actual artists themselves. And now that they have signed a deal with ZERO+ Publishing, hopefully you will get a […]

Preview: “Subject / Subject” @ Subliminal Projects

Tonight, a special show is opening up at Subliminal Projects. “Subject / Subject” is a show centered around showcasing some long time favorite and also upcoming female artists in a benefit for the Downtown Women’s Center. Co-curated by Deedee Cheriel, the show features some well known names such as Swoon (interviewed), Liz McGrath (featured), Mel Kadel, Jessica Hess and Jen Stark to name a few. It runs until May 8th, but the show’s opening reception is tonight at 8pm, so make plans to stop by […]

Openings: Last Gasp 40th Anniversary @ 111 Minna

Following LeBasse Project’s SF Pop Up Gallery debut (covered) and Fecal Face Dot Gallery’s Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck show (covered), AM wrapped up a busy and fun-filled night on the town by hopping down to 111 Minna for the opening of Last Gasp’s 40th Anniversary. The underground comic purveyor and alternative arts distributor has pulled out all the stops, calling on their extensive roster of freaks, fine artists and everyone in between. With an all star lineup featuring such luminaries as R. Crumb, the […]

Update: “A Cry For Help” @ Thinkspace Gallery

We already gave you a little taste of things to come (here & here), but we just wanted to update you on the “A Cry For Help” show opening tonight at Thinkspace Gallery in Sliverlake. Not only did all of the artists come through with some pretty good pieces (and a Bumblebee installation), the exhibition tonight is a benefit show for the endangered species of the world presented by Born Free USA & the Animal Protection Institute. Also, on Sat, Jan. 9th and Sun, Jan. […]

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Sloan Fine Art x Chris Berens

Chris Berens fans attending Art Basel are in for a treat his year as Sloan Fine Art will feature several pieces from him in their booth at SCOPE as a preview to his big New York show opening at their gallery on December 16th. Berens’ soft focus and imaginative work is a result of a unique and time-consuming process and are often homages to the Dutch master painters of yore. We have become increasingly enamored with his work after recent shows in Seattle and Amsterdam […]
