Preview / Setup: Interesni Kazki – “Nothing Special” @ Mid-City Arts

AM stopped by Mid-City Arts yesterday to visit with Ukranian duo, Interesni Kazki, as they prepared a new body of work for their show opening on Saturday night, November 19th. Like their recent exhibition in Milan (covered), Nothing Special will feature an indoor translation of of their surreal outdoor murals as well as some other surprises. Streets: Shepard Fairey – La Brea Mural (Completed)

Last week, AM stopped by for a visit with Shepard Fairey (featured) and the OBEY crew as they started work on the La Brea mural. The huge wall that wrapped around the former Continental Graphic’s building was created in association with the District La Brea group show (covered) at MK2 Projects. Showing: Geoff McFetridge – “My Head Disappears when my Hands are Thinking” @ Heath Ceramics

This neat little project from Geoff McFetridge, whose work we last ogled at in his solo show in Copenhagen, was brought to our attention recently. The LA-based artist just opened an exhibition at the renowned Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles featuring his paintings on the walls and some special ceramic products, many of which are one of a kind. Openings: Thomas Doyle – “Surface to Air” @ LeBasse Projects

Over the weekend, Lebasse Projects unveiled the new solo exhibition, Surface to Air, by artist Thomas Doyle. The artwork included a variety of photographs and sculptural work which touched upon the themes of destruction in suburbian landscapes. One half of the exhibit featured an incredible collection of miniatures that were created with an insane amount of detail and craftsmanship. Although the pieces were small in size, it demanded the viewer to truly pay close attention to the intricacies and settings which Doyle attempted to recreate. […]

Openings: “District La Brea” Group Exhibition @ MK2 Projects

Last weekend, MK2 Projects, the special exhibition space of Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles, hosted a group showing from Shepard Fairey, Deedee Cheriel, Mercedes Helnwein, Mark Whalen / Kill Pixie, Mel Kadel, Travis Millard, Matt Small, Samuel Lowder (FrePrs), Lezley Saar, Aiko Nakagawa, Todd Carpenter and Steven R. Video: Raymond Pettibon x Red Hot Chilli Peppers – “Monarchy of Roses” Music Video

Two legends of the Los Angeles music and art scene: the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Raymond Pettibon (who is a musician in his own right and the brother of Greg Ginn – the founder of Black Flag) come together in this music video made on occasion of the band’s new record. Directed by Marc Klasfeld, the video features the artist’s highly recognizable drawings.  If you’ve ever wondered how Pettibon’s work would look animated, stop imagining and start watching. Openings: Travis Louie – “Curious Pets” @ Merry Karnowsky

Just over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles unveiled a series of portraits from Travis Louie (interviewed) painted in his signature style and amazing detail to reproduce the look of vintage B&W photographs. Continuing to expand his narrative of pets and their owners, Curious Pets featured unlikely pairings and imaginative creatures all with their own backstories written out by the NY-based artist. Streets: Herakut (Los Angeles)

During the past week, the duo known as Herakut were in Los Angeles as part of Wende Museum’s Behind The Wall project (covered). However, the artist collective also took time to do a large scale mural which featured their signature style and character design. The wall, which took two days to complete, sits not too far from the city’s Chinatown area and it continues to show the technique that the artists have perfected during their time together. This Sunday afternoon, November 13th, the Wende Museum presents Behind the Berlin Wall, a private reception ($50 to benefit the museum, call 310.216.1600 ext. 305 for those interested) featuring the unveiling of murals from Herakut, D*Face’s (interviewed), and RETNA (featured) on a remnant of the Berlin Wall, the longest stretch in the world outside of Germany.
