Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Hello and Goodbye” @ LeBasse Projects

“Hello and Goodbye” (featured) the latest body of work from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) opened this past Saturday at LeBasse Projects. The show featured some of Yamamoto’s largest paintings to date and the level of detail and techniques employed by Yoskay for these new pieces clearly show his artistic growth since his last solo. These latest works reveal a physical texture that compliments his signature aged and acid washed backdrops and AM also enjoyed his venture into a bolder palette that makes his subjects “pop.” Yoskay’s […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Strange Grooming Habits” @ Copro Gallery

Last night, the artist community and fans were out in full force for the opening of Travis Louie’s (interviewed) “Strange Grooming Habits” at the Bergamot Station. For this show at Copro Gallery, Louie dressed up the bizarre denizens of his imagination in stately garb and painted them in his signature style of emulating vintage photography from the Victorian era. His tremendous attention to detail was readily apparent, especially in the 28×37″ painting of his beloved “Bill” (seen above). Those who thought Louie’s work would not […]

Openings: “Shinganist” Group Show @ FIFTY24SF

Japanese artist Usugrow, best known for his collaborative projects with Upper Playground and Vans, debuted his latest project “Shinganist” at FIFTY24SF last night. Featuring the paintings, sculpture and drawing of Bene, Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka and Jun Kaneko, “Shinganist” is an intriguing look into the work of some of Japan’s up-and-coming young artists. Straddling the fine line of street art, skate and tattoo culture, while simultaneously drawing inspiration from centuries of traditional Japanese imagery, the project looks like it’s off to a great start with a […]

LeBasse Projects: Dining with Yoskay Yamamoto & Melissa Haslam

Fine dining and even finer art – that’s what life’s all about. Last night, AM was invited to attend a very intimate dinner with a small group of collectors to preview the upcoming shows of Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) and Melissa Haslam (interviewed). The dinner was hosted by LeBasse Projects and provided a select few some private time to interact with the artists and find out more about their work and artistic direction. The fun night also gave attendees a chance to catch up and have spirited discussions […]

Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Watching Shadows” or “Kageboushi” @ Space Yui (Japan)

Audrey Kawasaki’s (interviewed) show “Watching Shadows” or “Kageboushi” opened last night at the Space Yui Gallery in Japan. The exhibition included some of her signature paintings of dreamy-eyed girls, who have a sense of innocence, yet paradoxically possess a touch of sensuality as well. However, it seems that in this body of work, although subtle, her characters are maturing in front of our eyes, perhaps with a hint of what’s to come. No canvas pieces in this show, but Audrey explores her lasercut technique further […]

Openings: Jab Strong Fierce (Street Fighter Tribute Show) @ Nucleus Gallery

AM stopped by Nucleus Gallery couple weekends ago to check out the art and festivities of the Street Fighter Tribute show. The video game inspired art certainly delighted the crowd, but just as entertaining were the events associated with the show like the cosplay contest and the street fighter playing tournament. Check out all the pics after the jump…

Openings: Sam Flores – “Ego, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories” @ Subliminal Projects

“Ego, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories,” the latest body of work by Sam Flores (interviewed) opened to a packed crowd Saturday night at Subliminal Projects. The show, laid out in Flores’ storybook illustration world, revolved around the premise of the basics of everyday human struggle, controlling our inner demons and the balance between good and bad. It was great to see that Flores included something for everyone in the show, ranging from his amazing large-scale paintings, to intimate portraits of his characters, as well as […]
