Openings: Saber – “The Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (London)

After Newcastle, LA-based graffiti artist SABER (interviewed) launched the second installment of his first European solo show The Ugly American at The Outsiders in London. Suffering from epilepsy and being denied healthcare, the politically engaged artist decided to voice some issues and battles for universal care by attacking and transforming iconic images of US and Union Jack flags, using found packing crates. Saber’s abstract paintings, made with layered collages and painted paper, combine harmoniously to form a delicate texture with his strong and powerful sharp signature lines. The show runs until mid February. […]

One series consists of wood depictions (featured here) of the US Flag and the Union Jack, scarred and covered with his mark-making. The other pieces in the show are his abstract tags and urban calligraphy, sometimes peeking through from the back. Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss Saber here.

Upcoming: Saber – “Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (Newcastle)

It looks like the next showing for SABER (interviewed) after his big exhibition in New York (covered) earlier this year will be at The Outsiders in Newcastle – opening to the public on September 6th. Entitled Ugly American, the American graffiti artist’s European solo debut will feature urban depictions of both the American flag and of the Union Jack. He explains the show title as “a reference to the excesses, and foul nature, that some believe Americans possess. Obviously this has similarities to modern Britain too, but… I come […]

Update: Saber

After his big exhibition in New York (covered), all has been quiet from SABER (interviewed) as of late – until several days ago. He shared some work that we have never seen exploring some new mediums for his American flag remixes like wood (Desert Flags) and encaustic. You can see some of his work next at an event put on by Inner City Arts, but also follow him on Instagram to keep up to date on his work. Discuss Saber here.

Openings: Saber @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

West coast graffiti legend SABER (interviewed) recently stopped by the Big Apple to showcase a new body of work at Opera Gallery. Taking another step in his abstraction style, the street titan created a series that was quite moving with paintings that blurred the boundaries between sharp & tactical and smooth & strategic. Certain pieces focused on the razor sharp corners coming off exquisite line-work whereas other works drew you in with their muted and buffed textures hinting gently at a subtle vision that lies beneath. […]

Opening for public viewing on Friday (April 19th), this exhibition will be a perfect opportunity to check out the contrasting styles of Rostarr’s smooth east coast visuals and Saber’s sharp west coast technique (seen above). Don’t miss out on this urban showcase and go check out the work in person. Discuss Rostarr here. Discuss Saber here.
