Preview: “Cigarettes, Phone Cards & Hip Hop Clothing” @ FFDG

Next Friday, April 20th, Fecal Face Dot Gallery will be presenting a new group exhibition entitled Cigarettes, Phone Cards & Hip Hop Clothing. Featuring a list of artists as diverse as the title, San Francisco art-lovers will be treated to work from Tom Betthauser, Kelsey Brookes, Ryan Travis Christian, Scott Greenwalt, Robert Hardgrave, Hiro Kurata, Mildred, Pacolli, Marco Zamora, and Alex Ziv. Barry McGee, who’s a legend up there, will be revealing an installation at Gallery Paule Anglim’s offsite space (1717 17th Street in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill district) along with some other invited artists. This weekend, the Guerrero Gallery gallery will feature exhibitions from both Hilary Pecis and Erin M. Riley. Entitled Consensus, Pecis takes over 100 unaltered image files sourced from Google images to create her artistic compositions. Erin M. Riley presents a new body of work called Forgotten in a File featuring her signature woven tapestries exploring the lives of the internet generation with imagery depicting social media interaction and addiction. Openings: Nimit Malavia – “Finding Together Again” @ Spoke Art

Last Thursday evening, Spoke Art in San Francisco hosted Nimit Malavia’s solo show entitled Finding Together Again (previewed). The show featured drawings and paintings on paper, depicting reinterpreted myths and religious symbols in his signature flowing style. Last Saturday evening, Amsterdam-based artist Niels Shoe Meulman’s (NSM) exhibition Justified Scriptures opened at 941 Geary. The works in the show meshes his “calligraffiti” with repetition and abstract elements, to create what he describes as “Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin.” This exhibition reflects the road he has traveled as an artist – starting out with being a graffiti legend 80’s, to later becoming a designer/typographer who eventually starts a design company and then gets into advertising. On a wet Friday evening, Fifty24SF hosted Mexico City-based artist Saner’s latest exhibition entitled Corazon Sangrante (Bleeding Heart). The show is made up of a series of paintings and drawings (some of which have burn and stitching elements) with his signature characters fitted with animalistic masks in situations that reflect what he observes around him in everyday life. Showing: Ron Ulicny – “New Works” @ Spoke Art

Earlier this month, the Spoke Art Gallery opened its doors to a solo exhibition from Portland-based artist Ron Ulicny. His collection of New Works feature familiar objects that have been modified in novel ways to give new meaning to the pieces. The show included sixteen new sculptural creations, each challenging the viewer to find new purpose in the transformed items while showing off Ulicny’s humor and wit. More photos after the jump…
