Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “Pumpkins” @ Victoria Miro

Currently showing in London at Victorio Miro, Pumpkins from Yayoi Kusuma is an exhibition that features one of her most famous motifs. The celebration of the fruit in question was approached from different angles by Kusama, utilizing her various skill sets – paintings, large mosaic sculptures inside the gallery, and bronzes in the water garden. Despite the familiarity of the iconic subject matter for the Japanese artist, the bronzes do represent the first time she has worked in that medium on such a large scale and they alone are […]

Showing: Kenichi Yokono – “The New Suburbs” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Currently at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles, Japanese artist Kenichi Yokono has a show on view entitled The New Suburbs. The new collection of painted wood carvings are a continuation of what he presented with the same gallery back in 2011 (covered), and are fine examples of Yokono’s modern take on traditional woodcutting. Sourcing the grotesque and mundane from his native country’s culture, the intricate pieces deal with “notions of globalization and consumerism with the overwhelming cuteness (or kawaii) found in popular Japanese […]

Showing: Mark Jenkins – “Terrible Horrible” @ Ruttkowski;68

American artist Mark Jenkins opened his second solo with Ruttkowski;68 gallery in Cologne on Friday night. Titled Terrible Horrible, the show featured a number of new tape sculptures as well as a couple of clever canvas interventions. The last time he visited the city, he created some public works for CityLeaks Festival (covered) in contrast to this time when he created some indoor works, including an installation for the pre-opening dinner. The exhibited works show once again that “the possibilities that can be achieved through his technique are almost […]

Remed & Okuda @ Campo Viejo (Spain)

Remed and Okuda recently got together for a joint project in Spain at the Campo Viejo vineyards. Along with a mural they worked on, the two Spanish artists also collaborated on several sculptures at the Logroño location including the sweet large scale piece seen above. As you will probably agree, the geometric styles of both local artists blended together nicely and judging from the statement below, they will be working on future endeavors together. “Campo Viejo proposed to Okuda and Remed to create a work […]
Sam Wolfe Connelly

Openings: Sam Wolfe Connelly & Casey Curran: “Nocturne” & “Dissymmetry” @ Roq La Rue

Sam Wolfe Connelly (seen above) recently opened his solo show titled Nocturne at Roq La Rue. Film-like grain permeates his graphite drawings, with subject matter lending itself heavily to the eeriness of a moonlit night spent in the woods, where whispers can be heard if you listen hard enough. Interspersed between them are oil paintings, predominated in orange and red hues, which pull the viewer out of the trance that the monotone pieces create. A couple conte on mylar pieces are also added to mix, and […]

KAWS Paris Galerie Perrotin AM Imaginary Friends1

Openings: KAWS – “Imaginary Friends” @ Galerie Perrotin

Officially opening their doors just hours ago, Galerie Perrotin in Paris unveiled all new works from the NY-based KAWS in his highly anticipated solo Imaginary Friends. Highlights of the show included multiples of his running chum canvases (also replicated as showcards making a nice souvenir) as well as creatively-shaped irregular piece that appeared to be mirrored in a more conventional painting right next to it – leading to an interesting side by side comparison. Also making the trip and greeting fans in the courtyard was the impressive COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH) sculpture […]

Invader x Jason deCaires Taylor Collaboration

After invading space, finally living up to his full name, Space Invader has decided to explore another frontier – the underwater realm.  With an assist from Jason deCaires Taylor, whose underwater sculptural coral reefs and photography was featured in a recent show in New York, the French street tilist has affixed his classic imagery on the side of one of the reefs in Cancun adding another exotic locale notch to his belt of conquest. Discuss Invader here. Discuss Jason deCaires Taylor here.

Preview: Brian Viveros & Dan Quintana – “Desensitized” @ Copro Gallery

Brian Viveros and Dan Quintana are set to open a dual show tonight entitled “Desensitized” with collaborative (like the painting above) and individual works. In what seems to be a perfect match in styles, both artists will be bringing their cigarette-smoking, gun-slinging, bad-ass women to Copro Gallery for all to worship and enjoy. In addition to the art on the walls, the event will feature a loop of Brian Viveros’ films “Dislandia” and “Southern,” a custom made sculpture of one of the paintings, cocktail servers […]
