Preview: Shepard Fairey @ Irvine Contemporary

Continuing with our coverage of Shepard Fairey’s pending trip to DC, we now have the images that will be exhibited at the Regime Change Starts at Home show at the Irvine Contemporary Gallery.Â Shepard will have 9 new paintings and collage on paper pieces for the exhibition.Â Included is the LAST of three unique hand stenciled collaged portraits of Barack Obama’s campaign icon: “Hope”. Openings: Travis Louie & Kris Kuksi @ Shooting Gallery

Travis Louie & Kris Kuksi’s show opened up last Saturday in San Fransciso at the Shooting Gallery (previously previewed). If you have ever observed people looking at their works in person, you will notice that the viewer gets closer and closer to the artwork as they try and get a better look at the details. This is a testament to all the time and hard work put into these pieces.Â Â More photos after the jump.

Preview: Hisashi Tenmyouya @ Mizuma Gallery

On October 15, Tokyo’s Mizuma Gallery will open Fighting Spirit, a new show by one of contemporary Japanese art’s shooting stars, Hisashi Tenmyouya. Tenmyouya’s work fuses Western pop culture (e.g., hip-hop, video games, movies) with Japanese traditional themes and techniques, comparable perhaps to what Kehinde Wiley does with African American culture and classical European art. For Fighting Spirit, Tenmyouya will be showing eight new paintings, including his largest work to date, in addition to works on paper. The show runs through Nov. 15.

Last night, the prodigal Josh Keyes returned to his home state of Washington and brought the heavy artillery. AM got the scoop from the completely SOLD-OUT show at OKOK Gallery in Seattle. With the anticipation and buzz growing since the show was announced, Josh did not fail to disappoint with a simply stunning show. Looks like an emerging artist that we have been following, Melissa Haslam, has landed a show in LA. She opened in a group show called “Blender” last night at the new combined Cerasoli-LeBasse Gallery in the artsy Culver City district. The new gallery is a merge between Project: Gallery and the Cerasoli Gallery (formerly The Lab 101) and hopefully will help this Australian artist have more exposure to U.S. collectors. One of our favorite artists, Travis Louie, is opening a three-person show tonight at the Shooting Gallery. Louie’s technique must be quite complicated as he is able to paint photorealistic images of his imaginary creatures. Openings: KMNDZ & Ekundayo @ Thinkspace

Judging from the crowd that showed up for the opening, KMNDZ & Ekundayo careers are going in an opposite direction when compared to the stock market right now.Â Luckily we got there early and took some quick pics before it got too packed.Â The two artists spent several days completely transforming Thinkspace and their hard work definitely paid off. Along with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima, Ai Yamaguchi was one of the young, up-and-coming female Japanese artists involved in Takashi Murakami’s Tokyo Girls Bravo exhibition in 1999. Unlike the other two, however, Yamaguchi severed her connection with Kaikai Kiki and went her own way. Since then, she has done quite well for herself, showing her Japanese animation-style depictions of Edo-period geishas at galleries around the world, publishing beautiful silkscreen prints and collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura.
