Update: Joe Sorren

Even though his epic exhibition Interruption at the GCAC (covered) is still showing, Joe Sorren (featured) is already back to work doing what he does best – painting. This new commission piece that he recently finished is a piece for a friend and fellow band member. We look forward to seeing what is in store for Joe in 2011 including an animation project and a show in Italy at Dorothy Circus in October. Discuss Joe Sorren here.

Openings: “Never Judge” @ StolenSpace Gallery

Never Judge, a group show where a diverse group of artists were invited to reinterpret their favorite book covers, opened recently at the StolenSpace Gallery in London. Classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1984, War of the Worlds, and Beauty and the Beast had their covers redone by artists like Art Under Pressure, Shepard Fairey, Eelus, and Will Barras. Ever since his first road trip (Oklahoma City to Los Angeles) in 1956, Ed Ruscha has been inspired to create work from images he has encountered on the roads of western United States including his famed “Standard Stations” and the “Hollywood Signs” paintings. “Ed Ruscha: Road Tested” at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (on view January 23 – April 17, 2011) will retrospectively consist of approximately 75 works and will include key images based on Ruscha’s love for car culture and travel. AM recently attended The Hole Gallery’s latest show Postermat. The group exhibition was a little different than the typical group show because they went all retro with it. Imagine going back to your childhood and rummaging through mall shops for your favorite posters of sports, rockbands, singers or even comic books – almost everyone had a cheap but cool poster that was maybe mass produced, but meant the world to us. Releases: Mark Ryden – “Yoshi – The Forest Spirit” Poster

It looks as though there will be a new release from Mark Ryden, a reproduction of his painting Yoshi – The Forest Spirit, based on a painting seen at Art Basel Miami at the Michael Kohn Gallery booth in 2007. Priced at $250, sized at 19 x 23″, and with a run of 1000, the edition will be available presumably on January 15th from Portherhouse with the proceeds to benefit The Nature Conservancy. Streets: Olek (New York)

Agata Oleksiak or simply known has Olek has come into prominence recently for her crocheted interventions on the streets. Although more commonly known for her bikes, the “Crochet Guerrilla” recently created a “sweater” for the famed Charging Bull or “Wallstreet Bull” in New York. Interestingly enough, the sculptor, Arturo Di Modica, originally installed the bull (costing the artist $360,000 of his own money) without permission in front of the New York Stock Exchange in December 1989 so this new work is somewhat of a homage […]

Osgemeos – “Slava’s Head” for The Moulin / Dépayz’arts

It looks like Osgemeos has hooked up with The Moulin again for another project, this time to fashion Slava’s head out of a trailer. The character is taken of the famous Russian clown show – Slava’s SnowShow, which is also the subject of an animation that the Brazilian duo are working on (shown here previously). Sketchbook: Amy Sol

Inspired by some night-time walks by the coastline in the Northwest, Amy Sol (interviewed) recently filled her sketchbook with some night scenery since her last show was at Corey Helford (covered). It remains to be seen whether this translates to actual paintings, which actually would be pretty interesting.
