Streets: Phlegm / Abandoned School – Sheffield

Phlegm’s work in and around Sheffield has always given us a buzz here at AM, so when recently driving past Sheffield, we stopped by to take a look at the Art Fag that Kid Acne recently painted as we heard that Phlegm had made an addition to the mural, painting some of his distinctive buildings to form a smouldering end to the giant ciggie. There will be an interesting pairing of artists tomorrow night at the Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto with a new exhibition entitled Double Rainbow Rainbow opening. Jen Stark, who is known for her intricately beautiful paper cuttings will be showing alongside NYC-based Maya Hayuk. Both have shown their mastery in working with colorful patterns – Stark in the three-dimensional and Hayuk in paintings. Anish Kapoor – “Leviathan” @ Grand Palais (Paris)

Anish Kapoor, who recently returned to India to open his first solo exhibition there, has now traveled to Paris, the site of his first ever exhibition 30 years ago, to unveil Leviathan. The 35 meter tall work made from PVC is 13,500 square meters when inflated, forming a cathedral-like space inside (which viewers can enter) creating the illusion of being inside a giant whale. It looks like Newcastle-based Hush’s (interviewed) will be returning (see 2009) to Los Angeles for another solo show on May 21st, this time at New Image Art. Judging from the photos, his work is becoming increasingly more intricate and textured; something that was evident in his NY show last year (covered). Black Rat Projects in London recently hosted shooting@earth, a three-day event running from 5 to 7 May which launched @earth, the new photo-essay by Peter Kennard, assisted by Tarek Salhany. The exhibition also showcased a collection of works that packed a punch by former armour designer, War Boutique. Openings: Henry Gunderson – “New Work” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

Last Thursday night, Fecal Face Dot Gallery opened its doors to Henry Gunderson’s second solo show at the SF gallery (the first was in 2009, covered here). The exhibition consisted of of works in colored pencil & ink on paper (with some pieces affixed onto a bulletin board), his mixed media Linear series (which are comprised of the arrangement of various repeated inanimate objects), as well as a video sculpture reflecting his skateboarding lifestyle. Steve Powers aka ESPO has had a busy few weeks. First, came his part in the time-consuming Street Market installation at the MOCA for the historic Art in the Streets exhibition. Then, last Friday in Copenhagen, he opened his latest solo show at the V1 Gallery entitled simply Days. A fitting title as the work in the show includes some of his daily metaltations ruminating on the complexities of everyday life with his poetic world play and signature visual language using enamel paint on metal.
