Andrew Mackenzie’s connection to his environment is worn plainly on his sleeve. The artist is based in the Scottish Borders, where the nature-rich source imagery for his beautifully rendered oil paintings is found in abundance. Previews: Brendan Monroe – “Blobography” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

In another collaboration (see McFetridge here) that makes sense for both parties, Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles will be presenting a show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) early next month. Blobography will feature organic sculptural forms from the Bay Area-based artist, which have always been an extension of his science-influenced imagery. There’s a fresh player in the gallery ranks of New York City and it’s Jacob Lewis Gallery. Upcoming: Hideaki Kawashima – “Back And Forth” @ Richard Heller Gallery

This Saturday (October 18), the Richard Heller Gallery all be hosting the second solo showing from Hideaki Kawashima in the United States (see 2011). Entitled Back And Forth, the new body of work includes portraits of boys and girls, familiar to those who saw his last show although presented in a simpler more raw form in this new exhibition. Streets: Tom Fruin’s Stained Glass House @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

As a followup to his stained glass watchtower in 2012 (covered), Tom Fruin created a new installation last month at the Brooklyn Bridge Park for the Dumbo Arts Festival. Entitled Kolonihavehus, the house created from plexiglass was a hit with visitors during the day and at night, although it was particularly stunning lit up once the sun went down. Temporarily inhabited by duo CoreAct, attendees of the event were able to see the art structure enhanced by a collaborative physical performance. Via Colossal.

Going back to his comic book roots, James Jean (interviewed) revealed a project over the weekend at New York Comic Con that he has been working on with Good Smile. The Japanese manufacturer of hobby products is teaming up with Nickelodeon and Jean to create new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures based on his illustrations. Pre-orders will start up in November beginning with Leonardo, with the remaining three set to be released in next year. Via Hypebeast. Discuss James Jean here.

Continuing his assault on walls around the world, DALeast (interviewed) continued to paint his creatures that appear at home in their urban environment. This newest mural, painted with his signature kinetic brushstrokes, was created for the ongoing Urban Forms Gallery public works series in Lodz, the 33rd piece in the whole project. Handiedan’s (interviewed) Vesica Piscis and Canna Intrat from Sail (featured) opened on October 2nd as Roq La Rue welcomed back both artists to the Seattle gallery. Handiedan was able to make the trip from Amsterdam to talk with fans and guests wanting to know more about the intricate nature of her collage pieces. Iconic tattoo infused pin-up girls are featured while she explores astrology and planetary movement in the surrounding space.
