Mario Martinez aka Mars-1 (featured) recently opened a solo at Martha Otero Gallery entitled Toward A Distant Dawn. The new body of work includes much of the creative output that we have seen from the Bay Area-based artist of late including monochromatic works, his colorful otherworldly paintings, and sculptural representations of his symmetric and geometric visions. Those who have been in the vinyl art toy game for a while will no doubt remember Joe Ledbetter’s original Fire-Cat figure, one of his iconic characters. The Los Angeles-based artist has now decided to release an updated version of the toy – producing, funding and designing this project himself. Billed as his first independent vinyl toy, the edition will be limited to 400, stand almost 11 inches tall (one of his largest figures to date), and cost $99. Ernest Zacharevic recently did a month long art residency in Ipoh, Malaysia. During his stay in town, the Lithuanian born artist created several beautiful murals blending his works with old, worn out walls. With the new work, he focused on local people and their way of life, most noticeable in the Never Mine piece. Painted with black paint only and featuring the local landscape with people working in the fields, this effort was accepted extremely well by the locals. Specializing in desolate landscapes that feature silhouettes of the ruins of civilization or abandoned construction, the Ashville-based artist further develops the atmosphere with the palette he uses for the background. AM recently attended the much anticipated opening for Israel Lund at Lower East Side’s David Lewis Gallery. The eponymously named solo includes both his signature silkscreened canvas paintings along with a new series of sculptures which center around one of his core tools – the silkscreen.
